Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The promised expansion for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has arrived, taking both fans and new players a chance to go back 500 years before the main game's events. Torna ~ The Golden Country does a fine job of providing a mature tale and fresh combat that will satisfy both.
I adore the Xenoblade Chronicles series. On the Wii, the original was a breath of fresh air, bringing a long, deep JRPG to a system that desperately needed one. On Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X brought a vast open world which felt cohesive and completely unique. In Xenoblade Chronicles 2, players could easily spend 100 hours fighting monsters, completing sidequests, and collecting items. While that lengthy RPG was worthwhile (especially after post-release enhancements), repetitive and mundane quests made many of those hours feel like bloat. As a comparatively short expansion, Torna: The Golden Country had the opportunity to trim the fat and present a more focused experienced. It doesn’t. Instead, The Golden Country doubles down on the busywork, making more of it mandatory while providing fewer rewards for your effort.
I’m torn on whether or not I fully enjoyed this story-based expansion to Xenoblade Chronicles 2. While I absolutely adored the story components that Monolithsoft have delivered here, the supplemental side quests bog down the experience and cause this expansion to feel as if I was progressing through
