A better version of a great game with lots to do and intrigue abound. Ys IX is another winner for the venerable series and it's a far better port than its predecessor.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is the sequel to one of the best action RPGs I have ever played. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was a small triumph for developer Nihon Falcom, updating the series’ strategic button-mashing gameplay into its best version yet, giving players a huge deserted island to explore, while trying out wild new ideas with narrative. I say all this because apart from a few important changes, Ys IX looks and plays a lot like Ys VIII. But this is not a bad thing. For fans (like me) who fe...

Adol Christin, adventurer extraordinaire, doesn't know how to sit still. His unquenchable thirst for adventure brought him all over the known world and made him discover forgotten secrets while getting into all sorts of troubles. Fans of the series have loved getting out of all these troubles while in Adol's shoes, and they will love doing so once again in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. The latest entry in the series takes everything that made Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana such a great game and brings it to new heights.

The problem is the game feels like a major step back from the previous entry in the series. The stilted storytelling, boring setting, and just decent soundtrack all feed into my feelings of disappointment. Lacrimosa of Dana was one of the best games I played in 2017, and the fact that Ys IX doesn’t reach that high is frustrating.

I was introduced to the world of Ys a few years back. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana ended up being one of my favorite games of 2018, and it’s still one of my favorite RPGs for the Switch. It combined a fantastic soundtrack, fast-paced combat system, and surprisingly enough, considering the “VIII” in the title, a storyline that was very accessible for newcomers to this really old series. I then proceeded to play (and enjoy) some older Ys titles that had been recently re-released for newer h...

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is an excellent RPG is the long running Ys series that takes the story in a darker direction. It retains the character traits that fans know and love of Adol, Dogi and other companions. The combat system is further refined with some new features to keep the series fresh for long time fans. However, the game's PS5 crashing issues might plague one's experience so keep that in mind. Overall, the game is definitely worth the time for new and old fans alike.

Adol Christin's latest adventure stands out from the rest of the Ys games with a narratively darker tone and some of the best sidequests in the entire series yet.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a continuation of what fans have come to expect from the series and the Monstrum gifts add a new and fun gameplay mechanic. In some ways the Monstrum gifts make this the most fun Ys game to play even though there are other arguments against it being the best one. The game isn’t perfect; some of the story exposition in each chapter feels unnecessarily long, and while the missions are varied enough to keep things from being too repetitive, the formulaic approach does make progression feel predictable. Closing off the Grimwald Nox in each chapter...

The more I played Ys IX, the deeper I fell for it. It looks, plays, and sounds similar to Ys VIII, but its emphasis on story and new movement abilities like grappling, gliding, and wall-running gives it a flavor of its own. Better still, action RPG fans who've long been "Ys-curious" can jump into Ys IX without fear of missing out on the ongoing story. The Court of the Crimson King welcomes all adventurers, new and old.
