As one of my favourite action RPGs ever, I'm happy to have played Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta on Switch and it's still great stuff.
The long-running Ys series has been steadily bringing its older titles to modern platforms. Ys is weird because it has a linear timeline, but between new games jumping around and a spotty localization history, it can be hard to perceive accurately without help. Falcom also loves to retcon things, especially when it comes to scrubbing out odd moves from its past. Take Ys 4, for example. There are two different Ys 4 games, neither of which was actually developed by Falcom itself. Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta is still the same game from the PlayStation Vita. It is still a solid title to play with a strong core gameplay loop. It still has some of the problems of being made for that hardware, like its graphics and party AI.
Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta is a furiously-paced action JRPG that has a big world to explore. It's a world that feels great to explore, and you'll often feel rewarded for doing so. Finding little alcoves and secret areas is always enjoyable, and the way the game urges you to do so is incredibly natural. The bosses are a little weak, and it is a bit on the shorter side of the JRPG spectrum at twenty hours, but I feel like that's a genuine strength of the game. If you've never played Ys before, this is a great entry point for any newcomer.
How do you breathe life into one of the most middling entries in a series after almost 10 years? Nothing, apparently. Ys Memoire: Revelations in Celceta is releasing for the Nintendo Switch, and with the exception of the option to listen to a worse version of the soundtrack, there are no noticeable differences from the PC version. Well, aside from the $5 price bump.
