Penguin Colony Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Penguin Colony is an inspired reimagining of Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness. Putting aside some awkwardness in presentation, Penguin Colony is a raw, assured rhetorical march through a wintry landscape toward a mountain dripping with horrors both unknown and painfully known.
Something ancient and horrible stirs in the farthest south: Are you bad enough penguin to… not really do much about it?
Penguin Colony is a fascinating work with a much-needed reinterpretation of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, woven into an important anti-colonial and anti-fascist narrative. It's a shame that its brilliant storytelling can be lost amidst technical issues, control problems, movement problems, and confusing environments.
H.P. Lovecraft’s mythos often focuses on eldritch beings that can’t be understood by mortal minds.
Artemis Octavio professes her love for flightless birds, as well as morbid curiosity for esoteric mysteries, in her review of Penguin Colony.
A clever and unforgiving send-up of Lovecraftian race horror, with lumpy platforming and a surprising amount of FromSoftware DNA.
Penguin Colony is a strange, unsettling blend of cosmic horror and abstract storytelling. It’s a thought-provoking narrative about war and humanity’s destructive pursuit of power, where the ends are used to justify the means. A few technical hiccups keep it from being entirely flawless, but its unusual perspective and the questions it leaves you with make it well worth the journey.
