Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a fantastic cerebral and surreal puzzle game that could be an all-timer.
The inclusion of asynchronous multiplayer is going to be a boon to those who can’t commit to multi-hour play sessions but can tip away at a game over time. Aesthetically, Solium Infernum is stunning and boasts a distinctive style, one that is aided by a soundtrack that matches tonally with the game’s themes. League of Geeks has crafted a masterful political strategy game, one that I foresee damaging a lot of friendships.
It’s a shame that Riot Forge is being discontinued following Riot’s recent layoffs, as every game created through the initiative has been of a high quality. At the very least, I think the last game released through Riot Forge is the best yet.
Song of Nunu is a charming little adventure that will delight League of Legends fans but likely bore those not familiar with the IP.
Baldur's Gate 3 is an excellent game and a worthy successor.
In the end, that’s what Scars Above is. It’s solid, but not exciting. The game looks good, and it’s got cool creature designs, but it’s lacking in everything else. The boss fights aren’t interesting, the combat becomes routinised and while the narrative engaged me, the characters aren’t well-written. If anybody told me they were emotionally connected with Kate, I would be very hesitant to believe them. Scars Above is a fine game, but not a very memorable one, especially in a period when sci-fi survival horror is becoming a crowded field. Much like the planet you explore, Scars Above is devoid of life.
Pentiment is a shining example of committing fully to an idea without worrying about where it fits in today's gaming market. The result? One of the best games of the year, narrative and otherwise.
And so what? I’m not a huge fan of how bulky the environment feels at times, and the walking sections can become tiresome, but the truth is, Requiem had me engaged from start to finish. Sure, the game has its flaws, and it’s not a very malleable experience, but that doesn’t stop it from being a good time all the same. At its heart, A Plague Tale is a narrative-driven atmospheric experience. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
