LEGO 2K Drive
Lego has always been about exploring possibilities and it seems those in charge of the franchise are looking to do just that in regards to video games. For years Lego games were dominated by the various licensed open-world beat ‘em ups from developer TT Games, and while those aren’t going...
It’s hard to think of another game that’s been as anticipated, analyzed, and argued over prior to launch as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Given how groundbreaking and popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was, hype levels were always going to be, well, legendary,...
WWE 2K23
In wrestling lingo, a “hope spot” refers to that one last desperate comeback before the wrestler destined to lose finally goes down for the count. After the embarrassing WWE 2K20 nearly deep-sixed the franchise, WWE 2K22 made a lot of positive strides, but I wasn’t quite convinced it was the...
2022 saw Nintendo’s beloved puffball Kirby ascent to new heights. Kirby and the Forgotten Land was not only the series’ first full-on 3D platformer, it was probably the marshmallow’s best game ever and one of the top first-party Switch games, period. It’s also already the franchise’s best-selling entry to date....
A lot can change in around five years. Octopath Traveler made a moderate splash in 2018 thanks to its striking HD-2D visual style, unique character-focused structure, and the fact that the Nintendo Switch just didn’t have a lot of games like it at the time, but it didn’t quite join...
Everybody loves a good mashup and Ship of Fools from Canadian indie developer Fika Productions combines two of today’s most popular indie obsessions, namely roguelites and relationship-fraying couch co-op games like Overcooked and Moving Out (perhaps unsurprisingly, all the games mentioned in the above paragraph are published by Team17).
Forget slashers and zombies, cults and “folk horror” are having a bit of a moment right now with movies like Midsommar, Mandy, and Hereditary making robes, weird ceremonies, and tea with things you really shouldn’t be drinking mixed in the new hotness. The Chant from Vancouver-based indie developer Brass Token...
Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands is a story that’s grown in stature with time. While not a huge hit when it was first released, the series has gained a dedicated fanbase due to its twist-filled plot and surprisingly grounded, likable characters. Despite the series’ cult status, few expected a sequel,...
Good ol’ Guybrush Threepwood has been sailing choppy seas for a while now. Following those back-to-back early-90s classics The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, series masterminds Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman weighed anchor and left LucasArts. The franchise continued with The Curse of Monkey Island...
Splatoon 3
Nintendo’s Splatoon franchise has been in need of a bit of a touchup for a while now. The first Splatoon made about as big a splash as was possible on the beleaguered Wii U and two years later Splatoon 2 brought the series to new heights on the Switch. The...
Have you ever wished you could relive your teen years? Yeah, I know, me either. Although, what if you got to do it on a distant planet, surrounded by trippy landscapes, weird-ass aliens, and genetically-altered classmates? What if you had real control over how you grow up and an endless...
Kirby has been celebrating his 30th birthday in style. Earliest this year, we saw the release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, perhaps the best game in the pink one’s long lineage and one of the best first-party Switch games period. But Nintendo wasn’t done, as earlier this Summer, they...
