Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn offers a satisfactory amount of content at its price point, focusing on a beloved element of the fantasy genre. The inclusion of mixed affinity tomes adds intriguing twists to gameplay, although witnessing the evolution of new units can prove challenging due to their inherent fragility. The larger dragon units and Dragon Lords themselves appropriately embody a sense of awe and power on the battlefield.

The Age of Wonders franchise has never quite achieved the same level of success and notoriety as turn-based strategy contemporaries like Civilization or Stellaris, but Paradox Interactive and developer Triumph Studios seem intent on changing that. The sci-fi spinoff Age of Wonders: Planetfall left a solid impression back in 2019, racking up respectable reviews and the best sales the franchise has seen to date, and now, the series has returned to its roots with Age of Wonders 4.

Age of Wonders has a long history of great 4X strategy games. One of its defining features is the sheer variety of playstyles available from its various factions. That variety is why the previous game in the franchise, Age of Wonders: Planetfall, became one of my favorite games.

Age of Wonders IV from Publisher Paradox Interactive and developer Triumph Studios is out on May 2nd. The game has a lot of positives going for it, but it may still need a few more tweaks to make it a great experience. Before setting out as a Wizard-king or mortal Champion, check out Kevin's review of this fantasy 4x strategy game.

Age of Wonders 4 is a fantastic entry in the Age of Wonders series, giving players freedom and choice. The game is so full of customization that it gives unlimited possibilities that no two games will ever be the same, nor would anyone want them to be.
