Do we really play as the good guys? It’s a question people who over-analyze video game mechanics like to ask. In RPG’s for example, are we still the hero even after we slaughter countless creatures just to get a better drop? After gunning down enemy after enemy without hesitation in shooters, are we still on the right side? Is anything you do in a racing game even sort of legal? Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered is a stellar remastering of one of the series most overlooked entries. Though it pales next to Origins, Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered generous, content stuffed and budget priced effort still bears revisiting all the same.

I can't help but shake the feeling that Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered exists solely to drive home how badly the series needed to be torn down and rebuilt. The interesting story and fantastic ship combat still make for a good entry, but boring land combat and awkward parkour bring it down.

Rogue felt like a throwback when it was originally released alongside the next-gen Assassin's Creed Unity. This same feeling accompanies this remastered version. After the significant advancements made to the series by last year's Origins, Rogue second outing feels equally dated and mistimed. Ironically for the series, Rogue Remastered proves that going back in time isn't always fun.

The Assassin's Creed series made a glorious comeback with Assassin's Creed Origins following a well-needed hiatus. Since the release of Assassin's Creed 2, Ubisoft released a new entry in the series every year, and quality suffered terribly. In 2014, Ubisoft went the extra mile and released two main entries in the series: the often criticized Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Rogue.
