Assassin's Creed: Rogue Remastered Reviews

Do we really play as the good guys? It’s a question people who over-analyze video game mechanics like to ask. In RPG’s for example, are we still the hero even after we slaughter countless creatures just to get a better drop? Despite a promising narrative and established gameplay structure, Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered fails to innovate from its predecessor or meaningfully improve upon its original release.

May it be the likes of Shadow of the Colossus or Metal Gear Solid, if it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

Another older installment of the Assassin's Creed series is coming to current generation consoles. Although there is not much to criticize about the conversion, it does not stand out in any positive way.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered is a stellar remastering of one of the series most overlooked entries. Though it pales next to Origins, Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered generous, content stuffed and budget priced effort still bears revisiting all the same.

Rogue felt like a throwback when it was originally released alongside the next-gen Assassin's Creed Unity. This same feeling accompanies this remastered version. After the significant advancements made to the series by last year's Origins, Rogue second outing feels equally dated and mistimed. Ironically for the series, Rogue Remastered proves that going back in time isn't always fun.

I can't help but shake the feeling that Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered exists solely to drive home how badly the series needed to be torn down and rebuilt. The interesting story and fantastic ship combat still make for a good entry, but boring land combat and awkward parkour bring it down.

The Assassin's Creed series made a glorious comeback with Assassin's Creed Origins following a well-needed hiatus. Since the release of Assassin's Creed 2, Ubisoft released a new entry in the series every year, and quality suffered terribly. In 2014, Ubisoft went the extra mile and released two main entries in the series: the often criticized Assassin's Creed Unity and Assassin's Creed Rogue. Heavily inspired by Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, the game developed by Ubisoft Sofia is considered by many the better game of the pair, and now PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners can finally experience everything themselves thanks to Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered, which introduced some welcome graphical enhancements, but does little to alleviate some of the issues found in the original release.

Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered is a serviceable remaster of the 2014 adventure. The game is stable, especially compared to the original, and the improved graphics and framerate is a nice update. However, it doesn't solve the many issues the game already faces. Perhaps one day we'll get a fully realized Templar focused Assassin's Creed game but for those wishing to experience the war from a different perspective will find some worth in Assassin's Creed Rogue.
