Betrayer knows exactly what it’s doing. Adventurers are weak amidst a cast of angered ghosts and mysterious events. Penetrating sounds keep tensions high. Isolation is strengthened by frustrating, esoteric design. Removing color takes away what little solace it could bring. Nothing is safe. Anything is dangerous and the chance for survival is slim. Olden days were tough.

Betrayer is a hugely atmospheric and unique game, with a cool exploration/survival thrust that never gets frustrating thanks to some excellent sound and visual design, but it’s really let down by these two major flaws. Betrayer’s unique setting, style, and grim stories that pepper the journey all make this a game that’s eye-catching at first glance and briefly emotional. But the things you actually do in this world rarely come across as anything other than uninspired. Dry combat and shallow objectives waste the potential.

The monster designs are unfortunately quite uninspired and don’t lend much to a horror look, with repetitive enemies which you’ll probably get sick of by the time you’re a couple of hours in. It’s a shame, because these enemies need to carry the bulk of the horror/action part of the game, and it’s something they just cannot do. Not on a presentation point, nor in a gameplay perspective.
