Boyfriend Dungeon is a unique game, but it hits every mark it aims for. While parts of the visual design don’t pop as well as the gorgeous character art and animated scenes, that’s a minor element of an amazing experience. It doesn’t matter if you’re solely a fan of dungeon crawlers or dating sims. Boyfriend Dungeon makes a compelling argument to be a fan of both.

Boyfriend Dungeon elicits an emotional attachment to its large cast of characters, but repetitive gameplay and dungeons sour the experience.

I could talk about this game forever, but in summary, I like Boyfriend Dungeon. To address the ‘Zagreus-shaped’ elephant in the room, this game is not a direct parallel to Hades. Hades is a roguelike that dips its toes in the romance genre, and Boyfriend Dungeon is a dating sim that has a little bit of dungeon crawling on the side. Similar vibes, but different focuses, and Boyfriend Dungeon is well worth playing on its own merits. As someone who would never usually pick up a dating game I very much appreciate Boyfriend Dungeon’s successful attempt to diversify its gameplay...

Boyfriend Dungeon is an impressive matchup of two genres that I’d never think would make a decent pair. It juggles interesting personal entanglements with challenging action gameplay via its dungeons. Though it could really benefit from some depth to its romantic structure, it’s not enough to sour what is overall a fascinating experience.

When all is said and done, I was pretty satisfied with my overall experience with Boyfriend Dungeon when the end of the summer rolled. The writing was solid, and I ended up caring about a lot of the relationships that were formed. It is just a shame that the somewhat lacking combat and issues with a couple of the characters and situations arise that end up bogging the game down a bit.

Visual novels are nothing new, but they flourished in the late nineties as an offshoot of Japanese adventure games. More of an interactive experience than the usual gameplay, these titles center around a journey where the player chooses between several story routes, effectively shaping the narrative. This genre is also known for its bursting romance simulators, though in recent years the medium has started to cater to a wider player base beyond the usual target audience. Boyfriend Dungeon puts a roguelike spin on the genre and weaves a compelling storyline with a comedic twist reminiscent of games like Dream Daddy.

Boyfriend Dungeon, the dating simulator blended with a dungeon crawler fix is finally here. As teased via interviews and marketing over the past two years, it’s filled to the brim with saucy romances and fast-paced combat. The result is a solid product and a fun romp, but I can’t help but come out of the experience identifying plenty of changes that in fact could make this good game something much greater.

Despite an underwhelming boss fight and some undercooked action elements, Boyfriend Dungeon is a great dating sim experience with a lot of heart

While it’s a bit too short to realize its full potential, Boyfriend Dungeon is still a well written and fun visual novel/dungeon crawler. The characters are lovely, and combat is simple but functional. It’s certainly worth playing, but could use more content.

There are so many isometric dungeon crawling style games out there right now. They were popularised by Diablo, and brought back into the limelight by the rave reviews for Hades and The Ascent (well, at least in our team). One thing is missing from a lot of these games though, and it’s a pretty big thing to be missing. The ability to go on dates with your weapon. Luckily, that’s where Boyfriend Dungeon comes in. That’s right, finally a dungeon crawling game where you can go on dates with...

Boyfriend Dungeon is the perfect combo of thirsty and thoughtful. Whether it’s the deliberate decision to embrace an inclusive gameplay experience or the choice to use the characters you meet to explore insecurities and then fight those fears in the dunj, this game succeeds in hitting the feels.

This dating sim meets dungeon crawler has wonderful characters and great writing that delivers some really thrilling romances, but it's let down by the dungeoning side feeling a bit undercooked.
