Every hero has their unique super-strengths in this wonderfully intense turn-based strategy game.

With its vibrant visuals, intricate gameplay mechanics and a narrative that both entertains and provokes thought, Capes sets itself up as a memorable addition to the superhero genre. While there are minor audio-visual sync issues and balance quirks in the combat system, the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive. This game promises hours of engaging gameplay and delivers a powerful commentary on control and resistance in a dystopian future.

While the storytelling for Capes might not be up to par with the comics that it takes inspiration from, the real fun lies in how well-structured the gameplay is. Before long, you really do forget everything going on outside of missions and enemy encounters.

Capes is a valiant effort at a relatively unique idea, one that I personally have wanted since I heard Midnight Suns would have a card-based attack system. It isn't perfect, it could do with a little more polish, and it's occasionally a bit frustrating, but it's deep, challenging and the story is enjoyable enough if you like comic books' campy style. Considering this is Spitfire Interactive's debut game, it has absolutely convinced me to keep an eye on their future projects.

Capes is an enjoyable tactical turn-based strategy game that's enjoyable to play on the Steam Deck, even if it falls a little short in some aspects.

Capes is a good enough game, but lacks the necessary distinction to go up, up and away.

Anyone who's played XCOM or the more recent Marvel's Midnight Suns will be instantly familiar with the mechanics on offer in Capes, as players progress through missions to unlock new characters and gain experience to upgrade their existing team. Combat takes place on a grid, restricting participants to a certain amount of movement and actions per turn, meaning planning is essential, especially when positioning plays such a key role in defeating the enemy. Video games, with their increasingly longer development times, with the ways developers have to pray just to stick together for successive launches are starting to look a little long in the face, the skin is starting to hang off of the bones a little too much. By the time you’ve got something, anything to pull from comic books at all - they’ve already started to move on without you.

Come for the satisfying, concentration-demanding turn-based tactical puzzles with a diverse and interesting roster. Reconsider your stay when the difficulty curve takes to the skies.
