Children of the Sun is hellbent on occupying your mind. During the six hours it took me to hit credits, I was engrossed in mastering its simple, yet wonderfully executed central mechanic. At first, taking down dozens of cultists with just one bullet was a fun gimmick to tinker with. As time passed, I became obsessed with pushing the tools at my disposal to their limits, repeatedly using people as target practice until I had concocted a satisfactory murder plan.

Children of the Sun is a revenge story that has you in the driver’s seat of a sniper assassin, hell-bent on taking down each and every individual member of the cult that did you wrong. Using a supernatural bullet that can change trajectory or speed at a moment’s whim, you must work through a gauntlet of levels, in each given instance taking down all targets in an environment with One. Single. Bullet.

Children of the Sun's gritty and surreal world is home to an innovative puzzle game that mixes long-range sniping with macabre brain teasers, culminating in your enemy's brains painting the walls.

Children of the Sun is a unique FPS puzzle game that takes a dark approach to a fun logic puzzle of trajectories. While the formula does iterate as the game progresses it still left us wanting for more by the time credits rolled.

Children of the Sun garnered plenty of attention on its (still freely available) demo’s strong Steam Next Fest showing back in February, and it’s a thrill to see the game already prepped for release. Its grim tone and novel approach make for a perfect match with publisher Devolver's stable, lining up nicely alongside stylish action riffs like Hotline Miami, Heavy Bullets, and My Friend Pedro, among many others. Its violence abstract and its visual presentation outlandish and odd, Children of the Sun feels like a clever exploration of murder, with excellent sense of feedback that makes it an easy one...
Read Full ReviewChildren of the Sun is an absolutely weird game, but in a lot of good ways. The narrative and aesthetic are intensely gloomy and disorienting, the puzzles of how to dispatch all cultists in any given level are smart and engaging, and the alternate gameplay sections aside the main shooting levels are unique enough to keep things interesting. Its abrupt nature can sometimes get in the way of its purpose and progression, sometimes for lack of clarity and sometimes for lack of any info whatsoever beyond personal experimentation. That said, Children of the Sun excels where it counts. It’s a...

Children of the Sun is one of my favorite games this year. It makes you feel like a badass as you guide the bullet as it soars through each level.

Devolver Digital has been on a bit of a roll over the past few years. Games like the thought-provoking Talos Principle 2 and the addictive roguelike Cult of the Lamb have been phenomenal successes that have become some of our favourites. They are also undoubtedly not afraid to release some weird and more experimental games, like The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. Children of the Sun is a game I randomly found while browsing Devolver’s upcoming games list, and I’m really glad that I found it.

While many will feel it's one or two chapters short of a truly fleshed-out and fully-realized vision, Children of the Sun's short but lavish flair for the hyper-violent is one of both visual and audible delight throughout. With what might be one of the most interesting and quick-to-convince takes on shooter mechanics in many a year, developer Rene Rother's knack for the look and feel of such an onslaught allows both art-style and gameplay alike to boldly glisten. As divisive the in-game graphics and general presentation might wind up being. But it's in no small part thanks to composer Aidan...

“Children of the Sun stumbles on story, but its unnerving hyper violence hits its mark.”

The puzzle-shooter gameplay and bizarre presentation of Children of the Sun make it utterly unique. And while your success in some levels unfortunately relies on trial and error, it doesn't stop it from being a highly rewarding experience on the whole.

Children of the Sun is a fantastic puzzle game that feels great on the Steam Deck, even if it lacks much replayability.
