Chorus does an admirable job of trying to carve out its own identity in a genre that deserves the attention, but it just doesn't stick the landing. If you're a fan of arcade spaceship shooters and narrative adventures there's probably enough here to chew over, but there's just not much that Chorus has to offer that hasn't already been done better elsewhere. Despite being set in a gorgeous pocket of space and offering up some interesting ideas it sadly misses the mark in just about every way.

“Chorus' stellar space combat is brought down by a myriad of design choices that range from frustrating to outright annoying.”

Chorus is a madcap barrage of laser beams, missiles, and impossible space combat dodges, boosts, and chases in its best moments. At its worst, it’s bogged down with tiresome and repetitive encounters, frustrating checkpoints, and bland characters. Sci-fi space combat shooters are a niche genre today, so while I’m thankful Chorus exists, much of the game is a relatively linear and mundane slog, punctuated by a few epic encounters here and there that live up to a galactic fantasy.

There aren't as many space combat games as there used to be but Chorus is here to prove that the genre is relevant so let's take off.

Traveling through the cosmos is an experience many games have tried to emulate since their earliest inception. While technology has improved and the vision for what constitutes a video game set in space has grown in scope, Chorus is all about the majestic art of flying a tiny starship with devastating firepower to take down entire fleets of starships.

Chorus is a veritable smorgasbord of action, exploration, and captivating story. One that I’ll enjoy for many moons to come.

Despite featuring one of the worst usages of a Latin-infused font, making its Us look like Vs, Chorus is a space combat game announced a couple years ago that promised to deliver a thrilling storyline with fast-paced flying combat. I was eager to find out what developer Fishlabs, mostly known for its series of space shooters aimed specifically at mobile, could do when given enough resources to develop a full-fledged shooter with PC and modern consoles in mind. It’s time to see if Fishlabs w...

If you’re a fan of space combat and can push your way through the first couple hours, I’m fairly confident you’ll find a lot to like in Chorus. The core dogfighting is just plain fun, and the setpiece fights are something to see. If you’re not already a genre fan, however, I’m not entirely sure this will be the game to win you over.

A space shooter with incredibly fun and addictive dogfights that you might forget the game even comes with a story.

Chorus might ostensibly look like any other space shooter, but, discounting a few annoyances, it has some cool ideas of its own, and frenetic action that will pull you right in like a tractor beam.

Chorus misses out on the opportunity to let the player decide who the protagonist is, choosing instead to force a dramatic end-of-the-world scenario on the player that cheapens the ability to explore and take on side-missions. Read our review.

With a patch or two, Chorus could easily be turned around. When you’re engaging your enemies in the middle of deep space, boosting then drifting to rotate your ship around and snipe three or more enemies with your laser rifle before warping behind another and switching to your missiles to unleash a mighty payload, there’s nothing else quite like it. It’s just a shame that there are moments in between where you might consider just giving up your adventure, either thanks to a bug or a poorly-designed section that causes undue frustration.

Chorus simplifies the standard flight controls of other air and space shooters to slap on fun new attack and mobility options. It makes up for its stale characters with a cool setting and inventive ways to make use of your kit throughout the roughly 12-hour adventure. If a couple bugs can get ironed out, I have no doubt players will be singing its praises. The game is out December 3 for $39.99 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and Google Stadia.

While I never felt like I was experiencing anything truly special, I appreciated the effort put into the narrative side of Chorus. It helped to keep my interest piqued while I went about some of the space busy work I associate with the genre. Where a game such as Everspace may be more about the process itself, Chorus never loses sight of its focus, the bond between Nara and Forsaken. It doesn’t break new ground in the genre and, apart from a nifty battle with a monster space eel, lacks many standout moments. That said, space action junkies will eat...

While the story is nonsense and some of the elements don't feel that great, Chorus' high-intensisty space combat is so good it leaves me wanting more every time.

Chorus' controls and awesome powers make its space dogfighting some of the best, but the convoluted story and frustrating difficulty spikes hold it back from greatness. I would love to see a sequel with more interesting missions, where it just gets out of its own way and allows players to soar.

The mission design, whilst I applaud the attempts at variety, does start to get a bit samey – though less so if you perhaps just mainline the game and not engage in the optional side content. Medium difficulty provides a nice challenge, but players new to the genre may want to start on easy to get a feel for things before upping the ante – there’s a good 15 hours + of gameplay content here, so no need to rush.

Chorus is a game that works in the sense that it doesn't crash your desktop, but it's just an ambulatory shell with mere vestiges of soul left in it.
