Command & Conquer Remastered Collection Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Will this mean we can finally see a proper return of the franchise after the most recent and disastrous efforts? Time will tell. Sooner or later, time will tell. But until that time?
Despite its issues though, Command & Conquer Remastered Collection provides an excellent trip down memory lane – even if it is one that reminds us of how far videogames have come in the last 25 years. The real-time strategy might have moved on, but the Command & Conquer games still have a unique charm all of their own. Command & Conquer Remastered Collection certainly won’t win over any newcomers, but it makes for a commendable slice of nostalgia for those of us who grew up playing the games.
It’s as close to a perfect restoration of two genre-defining real-time strategy games as you’ll get - but the soporific effects of nostalgia do eventually begin to wear thin.
Command & Conquer Remastered isn't just the best way to replay these classic RTS', it's one of the best and most consumer-friendly remasters ever made. Welcome back, Commander.
My first introduction to Real Time Strategy (RTS) games was 1992s – Dune II. Any limitations of PC technology at the time were overcome by my imagination fueled by Frank Herbert’s novels. Having cut their teeth with RTS, developer Westwood Studios then turned their attention to creating a wholly new RTS property and in 1995, they launched the Command and Conquer (C&C) series. The C&C series used gameplay elements from Dune II and expanded on terrain elements, no longer restricted to the deserts of Dune and included the use of Full Motion Video (FMV) segments, albeit ones severely limited in th...
At its core, the game just feels great to play, and that's a small detail that a lot of nearly great games miss out on. The remaster polishes almost every system, while somehow leaving the soul of the game perfectly intact. Both longtime fans and first-time commanders would do well to give this one a shot.
I'm starting to feel like I'm in a bit of an alternate reality version of our history at the moment. Is this 2014, but rather than a load of games getting a remaster or touchup for the PS4 and Xbox One, as they did in our universe, it's the PC that is getting the remasters. From the fantastic Catherine to the publically hated Warcraft III: Reforged and the excellent Saints Row: The Third to the dreadful Mafia II. The previous year and a half have seen a litany of old games getting at least some new treatment. Command & Conquer Remastered may very well be the best of them all.
Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a masterclass in how to re-energise a classic title. There’s no denying that the 25-year-old gameplay doesn’t quite hold up to its modern contemporaries, but with over 100 missions, progressive options, revamped multiplayer, and full mod support, C&C Remastered is both a solid package and a proud testament to Westwood Studios’ genre-defining work. Now, about Red Alert 2…
I didn’t have a PC growing up, so I was a frequent visitor to my friend Ryan’s house. He and I would spend hours in front of his Pentium II, playing games. It wasn’t my PC of course, so I ended up playing what games he had. While that worked in my favour in many ways, especially in the case of Star Trek The Next Generation: A Final Unity, the arrangement also meant I was trying out things I likely wouldn’t have otherwise. That’s precisely how I was introduced to Command & Conquer an...
Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a real-time strategy game developed by Petroglyph Games and Lemon Sky Studios, published by EA. The remastered collection bundles the 1995 classic Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn and the 1996 follow-up Command & Conquer: Red Alert together in one neat package. It also includes every piece of expansion content for both titles. Originally developed by Westwood Studio, the 1995 Command & Conquer game was a trailblazer in its genre. Both Command & Conqu...
It has been 25 years since the release of Command and Conquer, one of the most influential strategy series in gaming history. Today we look at an HD remaster of the two games that started it all for this franchise. The wait is finally over, Welcome Back Commander.
The Command and Conquer Remastered Collection looks great, it sounds great, and there's so much polished content to enjoy, including never-before-seen bonuses. But the dated core mechanics turn an otherwise intriguing strategy game into a sometimes unfair slog against a computer that will inherently have an easier time working around its own limitations. It's worth a play for fans of the franchise or RTS games in general, but newcomers might find there are a few too many cobwebs to overcome compared to contemporary offerings.
