With Dead Space, Motive Studio has done a fantastic job however of implementing new features whilst keeping the integrity of the beloved original intact.
Dead Space does a good job of being a remake with enough changes to give enough of a challenge for returning players but also improves the scares enough that the new generation of gamers who are more used to gore will be shaking when something goes bump in the night. However, if you have played 2008 originally, it’s going to be hard to justify paying full price for Dead Space in 2023. If you haven’t played this game before, buy it. If you have played it before, find a sale before you buy it.
This Dead Space remake was done exactly how any remake should be. It was brought to life in a new engine with updated mechanics while staying true to the source material, and it looks beautiful when you play it. The combat, the exploration, the side quests, everything was meticulously put together in this remake to make it better than the original. It makes you wonder how long it will take for Dead Space 2 and 3 to be remade.
The Dead Space remake fixes a lot of the 2008 original's problems, but leaves a couple of big ones right where they were.
The gory third-person shooter isn’t quite as groundbreaking 15 years later
Dead Space remake brings the beloved survival horror franchise into the modern day, and then some. It’s a stunning reimaging of a classic that retains what made its progenitor so special while also improving various aspects that haven’t aged well. Plus, it’s also one of the best-looking and sounding games on modern hardware.
The Dead Space remake has been my first experience with the franchise. Despite being a huge fan of survival horror, my path has never crossed with any of the games in the trilogy. With the remake, I aimed to fix that, while also providing a perspective from someone who has played through with modern expectations and without rose-tinted eyewear. Does this remake of a 2008 game hold up in 2023? Absolutely, yes, though it doesn’t achieve its glow-up without some struggle.
The improvements on offer here are substantial, but no remake could succeed to this extent without a rock-solid foundation. When it comes to the overall layout of the Ishimura, the story, art direction, and gameplay design, Motive doesn’t stray far from the 2008 version, and it doesn’t need to. Controls, visuals, performance, and the clunky 3D map have all been improved this time around.
Motive's Dead Space Remake is a gloriously grotesque glow-up that embraces the original horror game's robust formula, and only a slight amount of jank keeps it from achieving perfection.
Like a necromorph reanimating the dead, Motive Studios has revived Dead Space and made it stronger and more terrifying than before. This renovation of the 2008 horror classic restores it beyond its original glory. The dismemberment-focused gunplay feels great, it looks even better, and while other noteworthy changes may not feel as substantial as some other remakes, they’re welcomed expansions to the existing template. The result is a remake that faithfully recaptures the magic of its predecessor while amplifying the elements that made it beloved in the first place.

Simply put: It doesn’t matter if you’ve played and finished the original Dead Space or not, Motive Studio’s remake is a perfect reimagining of the franchise. This is how remakes should be, and I’m very glad Motive nailed it. Hopefully, this means that we’ll see a Dead Space 2 remake (which is the best one in the trilogy in my opinion) announced soon.
After being burned by Resident Evil 3, I’m wary of any survival horror remake. So, I initially didn’t have high hopes for the Dead Space remake when it was announced. However, as EA Motive revealed more, I found my optimism rising. The studio stated multiple times that its prime directive was to be respectful of the source material, and it turned out better than I had hoped.
Dead Space Remake is the series revival fans have been waiting for.
While most aspects of Dead Space's original story stay the same in the remake, specific sections of the game have been completely overhauled or readjusted. Zero gravity sections now allow free movement in space, providing some of Dead Space Remake's most jaw-dropping sequences. Added side quests and information logs offer more insight into how things began to fall apart aboard the Ishimura. More context has been added regarding the strange religion based around the Necromorphs and Isaac's relationship with his girlfriend, Nicole. The Dead Space Remake also includes surprising plot twists and a new ending that players can unlock by completing the game's New Game Plus mode.
The Dead Space remake improves on the 2008 original in every category, offering quality-of-life improvements, new story content, side quests, and dramatically upgraded graphics. It's Dead Space, but better, and many fans will be happy to see this classic survival horror experience get the modern makeover it deserves.
