Devil May Cry HD Collection Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
At its best Devil May Cry is complex, punishing and befuddling.
The Devil May Cry HD Collection’s best assets are its price and the sheer quantity of content. But as years have gone by, the camera stands out as a sore spot on this iconic action series. The combat, difficulty, and highly-critical rating system make it an exciting piece of gaming history and worth checking out if you missed it the first time around. You may break a few controllers in frustration, but so did everyone else a decade ago.
SSSTYLISH! Apart from the pre-rendered cutscene bugs, this game performs like a true demon slayer and crushes performance while sticking to native resolution and cool temps.
Developed by Capcom, Devil May Cry is yet again getting the remaster treatment, this time bringing it up to speed with the PlayStation 4. The series, of course, follows the son of Sparda, Dante, as he jumps, shoots, slashes, and sasses his way through hordes of demons and horrible creatures. Devil May Cry is a series that sits fondly in the memory of its fans and having survived since its release in 2001, the series has only gotten better with each successive game. Dante himself has made notable appearances in other games such as PlayStation All-Stars, Project X Zone, and Shin Megami Tensei: N...
I was a bit torn on what to rate this collection. If you’re basing it on the games alone and you’re a first-time player, then this is easily a 4/5 star title. On the flip side, if you’ve already played, owned and beaten these games and already have the HD Collection that was released in 2012, then this is a 2/5 because Capcom didn’t even bother adding anything worth re-purchasing this title for outside of owning it on current gen for convenience.
Devil May Cry has long been heralded as one of the finest action series of all time. From slick visuals, satisfying combat, and just plain cool design choices, players have reveled in playing as Dante and co. in some hectic demon slaying action. 2018 has brought the Devil May Cry HD Collection to modern consoles, containing the original Devil May Cry (2001), the often maligned Devil May Cry 2 (2003), and the fantastic Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (2005). It’s the action, style, and ...
We tell you, it’s a good game! It’s not average! It might have some problems here and there, but you have to admit it is a “Good” game.
We might be getting old, but it seems that the Devil May Cry games are a lot harder than we remember. They used to be a breeze comparatively speaking, but nowadays it just hurts our wrist bashing buttons to carve and shoot through endless swathes of demon spawn. Repetitive strain injury aside though, does the original Devil May Cry trilogy still hold up in a world filled with great action adventures with sky-high production values?
Devil May Cry HD Collection is one of the most lackadaisical remasters that I’ve ever played – featuring little improvements on the same collection that released for older consoles back in 2012. That being said, the sheer strength of the games included (Devil May Cry 2 notwithstanding) and the modest asking price still make it a more than viable way to experience these games before an inevitable sequel.
This faithful-to-a-fault reincarnation of the first three Devil May Cry games is still a blast, but if you've played the 2012 remaster there's nothing to bring you back here.
