Disco Elysium: The Final Cut Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Disco Elysium is a unique blend of noir-detective fiction, traditional pen-and-paper RPGs, and a large helping of existentialist theory. Its twisting plot, cast of memorable characters, and sheer depth of choice combine to create an experience that begs to be savoured. It hits on every single one of the marks it sets out to achieve and left me yearning to spend more time in its world. Removing any of the minor gripes I had with the original by adding new quests and a full cast of well-voiced characters, The Final Cut elevates Disco Elysium from an already phenomenal RPG to a true must-play mas...
Traversing the mind of your character is as much a plot as the case you’re trying to solve, and once you’re immersed into the world of Revachol, you’ll be struggling to leave.
In November of 2019, COGconnected’s own Jake Hill wrote that Disco Elysium was one of the most compelling games he had played all year. I’m here, nearly two years later with Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (TFC), simply to echo that sentiment. The ways in which the original combined intelligent, suspenseful writing with RPG elements akin to Dungeons and Dragons is the perfect combo for any budding adventurist with an itch to scratch. And the choice/consequence system is designed in a way to make even the steeliest of souls second guess themselves at nearly every turn. It’s truly, truly brilliant.
Disco Elysium’s expanded edition successfully builds upon an already excellent RPG, making it just as relevant today as it was in 2019.
Disco Elysium is an incredible game that, when given some tweaking, runs beautifully on the Steam Deck.
The new content added to Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is exactly what is needed to turn a great game into an amazing one.
Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is a weird and wonderfully dark detective story that is quite unlike anything else you’re likely to have played. It takes the mechanics of a table-top role-playing game and seamlessly integrates them into an original story set in a world heavily steeped in politics. This Final Cut version of the game has new quests and full voice acting which really brings the world to life.
Disco Elysium is one of those games that you think about even when you're not playing it. Even just a few hours in, you'll find that this strange and at times absurd role-playing title has claimed a space in your mind. In truth, it's like nothing else on the market — and reviews like this one don't really do it justice. But, this is our job, and so we're going to try and explain what makes Disco Elysium: The Final Cut a modern classic.
While Disco Elysium: The Final Cut won't appeal to everyone, those that do enjoy it will sing its praises for a long time to come. Just be prepared for a few bugs if you play on console.
Like a good book, it's a game built on a wonderfully deep story.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a masterwork in video-game storytelling that will engross you from start to finish. Only persistent technical issues hold it back.
There are so many aspects of its design in which Disco Elysium stands unmatched. Boasting unparalleled player agency, the sort of writing that makes me deeply jealous and a cast of characters that are resolutely unforgettable, Disco Elysium is easily one of the most intelligent and fascinating RPGs ever made. However, in its current form, the presence of game breaking bugs that prevent you from finishing missions, levels a near fatal blow at Disco Elysium that not even its towering brilliance is sufficient to overcome. I'm sure there's a timeline where all the bugs have been fixed and I'm play...
