Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is the definitive version of an already brilliant game. It’s a melding pot of eccentric characters, thought-provoking social commentary, and a staggering sense of world and place within its setting. Its main narrative might fumble in its conclusion, but everything you’ll experience before that is some of the best stuff you can find in this kind of RPG.

Disco Elysium is an incredible game that, when given some tweaking, runs beautifully on the Steam Deck.

Traversing the mind of your character is as much a plot as the case you’re trying to solve, and once you’re immersed into the world of Revachol, you’ll be struggling to leave.

In conclusion, due to its origin and the number of words constantly displayed on screen Disco Elysium – The Final Cut sometimes comes across more as a visual novel than anything else.  It is rare for a game to have such historical depth and deeply complex narrative and therefore it is very impressive, although it should be stated this is not a game for the faint hearted or something that non-fans of this genre will probably want to take on.  Some of the subject matter is fairly grim and destructive behaviour is contained within the story but it is not glorified as there are penalties to be paid for activities such as drug use.  I cannot think of another game quite like this and can see why the game has been lauded since its original release.   If this particular style of game appeals to you it is not one to be missed.

Almost perfect if not for the nitty-gritty. If it’s quite there but not enough to push the boundaries, it’s still an awesome game.

The new content added to Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is exactly what is needed to turn a great game into an amazing one.

Like a good book, it's a game built on a wonderfully deep story.

Disco Elysium is one of those games that you think about even when you're not playing it. Even just a few hours in, you'll find that this strange and at times absurd role-playing title has claimed a space in your mind. In truth, it's like nothing else on the market — and reviews like this one don't really do it justice. But, this is our job, and so we're going to try and explain what makes Disco Elysium: The Final Cut a modern classic.

Disco Elysium has always been a game about making mistakes; in fact, it is an entire tapestry of mistakes. It revolves around a character who has made every mistake possible and his attempt to redeem them, forgive them, or embrace them. It is a game set in a world after a series of political mistakes, one where no one, not even the winners, are particularly happy. And it is a game about the player making mistakes, having joy, and release in failed attempts at remembering co-workers and solving crimes. The Final Cut, however, isn’t a mistake at all.

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is the definitive version of an incredible point-and-click RPG, mixing the darkest of humour with genuine insight in a surreal setting begging to be explored

In November of 2019, COGconnected’s own Jake Hill wrote that Disco Elysium was one of the most compelling games he had played all year. I’m here, nearly two years later with Disco Elysium: The Final Cut (TFC), simply to echo that sentiment. The ways in which the original combined intelligent, suspenseful writing with RPG elements akin to Dungeons and Dragons is the perfect combo for any budding adventurist with an itch to scratch. And the choice/consequence system is designed in a way to make even the steeliest of souls second guess themselves at nearly every turn. It’s truly, truly brilliant.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a work of genius. I'm planning to immediately replay it, simply because I don't want it to be over yet. The story is absolutely captivating, the world is filled to the brim with detail, and the characters and their motivations are remarkably well thought out. It made me laugh at absurd moment, made me gasp with the twists in the story, and I've developed an attachment to the main character's partner, Kim Kitsuragi, and his endless patience with me shooting finger guns at him as much as possible. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a masterwork and you are doing yourself a disservice if you miss it.

While Disco Elysium: The Final Cut won't appeal to everyone, those that do enjoy it will sing its praises for a long time to come. Just be prepared for a few bugs if you play on console.

Technical issues aside, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is the definitive edition of an already fantastic experience for the PS5.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a masterwork in video-game storytelling that will engross you from start to finish. Only persistent technical issues hold it back.

The writing, the characters, and the out-of-bounds interactions constantly caught me by surprise due to how much it sets Disco Elysium apart from other games. Its biggest shame is the current state of the Final Cut, to the point where it would be advisable to wait until some of the biggest problems are addressed. But rest assured that in the case of one of the boldest, most original RPGs of the last decade, it’s definitely worth the wait. 7/10

There are so many aspects of its design in which Disco Elysium stands unmatched. Boasting unparalleled player agency, the sort of writing that makes me deeply jealous and a cast of characters that are resolutely unforgettable, Disco Elysium is easily one of the most intelligent and fascinating RPGs ever made. However, in its current form, the presence of game breaking bugs that prevent you from finishing missions, levels a near fatal blow at Disco Elysium that not even its towering brilliance is sufficient to overcome. I'm sure there's a timeline where all the bugs have been fixed and I'm playing Disco Elysium for the first time, awarding it the 10/10 score it deserves. Right now, this isn't that timeline.

Disco Elysium’s expanded edition successfully builds upon an already excellent RPG, making it just as relevant today as it was in 2019.

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is a weird and wonderfully dark detective story that is quite unlike anything else you’re likely to have played. It takes the mechanics of a table-top role-playing game and seamlessly integrates them into an original story set in a world heavily steeped in politics. This Final Cut version of the game has new quests and full voice acting which really brings the world to life.

I wish I could play Disco Elysium for the first time again. This unconventional RPG from developer ZA/UM casts a spell unlike any other game; its surprising narrative, complex world, and flawed characters have the power to transport your mind to dark and delightful places. Though Disco Elysium was exclusive to PC when it originally launched in 2019, The Final Cut brings the experience to consoles, opening this strange world up to a new wave of superstar detectives. And even though it can’t turn back time for those of us who want to relive the first playthrough, The Final Cut’s additions provide a rewarding return trip.

Disco Elysium is a unique blend of noir-detective fiction, traditional pen-and-paper RPGs, and a large helping of existentialist theory. Its twisting plot, cast of memorable characters, and sheer depth of choice combine to create an experience that begs to be savoured. It hits on every single one of the marks it sets out to achieve and left me yearning to spend more time in its world. Removing any of the minor gripes I had with the original by adding new quests and a full cast of well-voiced characters, The Final Cut elevates Disco Elysium from an already phenomenal RPG to a true must-play masterpiece.
