Dragon Star Varnir Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Compile Heart can't seem to stop making top-notch JRPGs and Dragon Star Varnir is yet another triumph so let's slay some dragons.
Dragon Star Varnir could use some polishing in a few areas, but the combat, setting, and story make for a dark and compelling RPG nonetheless.
It’s not going to be remembered as a classic, but Dragon Star Varnir is one of the better JRPGs available on PS4. Its engaging story and deep character development enables you to look past its somewhat budget presentation and enjoy it for what it is – a JRPG that feels like it has come straight out of the PS2 age. And I mean that as a compliment. It’s old fashioned in many ways but it has some good ideas, and they’re likely to compel you to reach at least one of its conclusions; quite possibly more thanks to it being enjoyably concise.
It’s anime based characters appearance, and the game’s overall look, are par for the course when it comes to games by Compile Heart and Idea Factory. Scratch the surface, however, and you’ll find a gem of a game that’s both enjoyable in terms of story and gameplay.
A unique approach to combat as well as its character growth system combined with a solid storyline with a great cast of characters make Dragon Star Varnir a strong RPG that brings enough to the table to stand out.
So you’re looking for another JRPG to add to your collection, and you’ve stumbled across a new game from Compile Heart. There’s a demure looking female next to a heroic young man brandishing a sword on the cover. Congratulations! You’ve found Dragon Star Varnir, a non-Neptunia, non-Fairy Fencer, and non-Date A Live game. (I was starting to believe they forgot how to make other IPs, too. *wink wink* )
Compile Heart has become increasingly proficient at producing titles with dark premises and Dragon Star Varnir is proof of that. And fortunately, unlike other Galapagos RPG titles, the focus on narrative doesn't leave the actual gameplay hanging by the wayside.
Dive into an original and fantastical world filled with magic and dragons as you team up with some of the world's last remaining witches on a quest to lift a centuries-old curse! Varnir might fall short in some areas but still has plenty to offer for those looking for a new experience.
Dragon Star Varnir has an interesting combat system yet tells an unbalanced tale. The root of the problem for this adequate turn-based JRPG is lacking a proper balance between presentation and substance.
