Retro video games have made quite the comeback over the last few years. Developers have been cooking up some impressive titles loaded with tons of our favorite
Fox n Forests' fun take on season shifting puzzle solving and gorgeously designed world make for a fun platformer with a solid combat system.
Retro games have turned into a major arm of the games industry. Once a curious oddity, the past decade has seen them transform into a significant section of the modern gaming landscape. Often developers will try and evoke the memory of a certain genre or system in order to appeal to a modern audience of a certain age. Fox N Forests feels like it’s aimed squarely at the Super NES and Sega Genesis crowd. Indeed, the game is a perfect reproduction of that era, complete with its traditional shortcomings.
It is a shame the game doesn’t end on a better note, but I definitely had a good time with Fox n Forests. It may not be the second coming of retro platformers, but it certainly feels like a lost gem.
Fox n Forests is a really enjoyable throwback to its 16-bit inspirations. It takes the style, gameplay, and mechanics of early platformers and produces a game that both feels like a lost classic and remains fun and involving to play. Its main negative is perhaps an inevitable result of its close adherence to historical precedence as it is fairly short. It’s a bit short but there is increased longevity in finding all the collectables or playing through at harder skill levels, but the challenge is generally gauged well enough on normal that the latter didn’t appeal to me. If you fancy some truly...
The 16-bit era was full of timeless classics and games that are better off forgotten. Fox n Forests is heavily inspired by that era so get ready for one furry retro adventure!
Fox n Forests can’t be faulted for its fantastically accurate portrayal of 16-bit platforming; very few indie games have managed to nail the look and sound of the SNES so well. Its season-changing gimmick also makes for some inventive moments. Where it lets itself down is in its fiddly controls and its short length, which combine to make a game that’s merely good when it could have been great.
FOX n FORESTS is a game with a few really great things going for it - including its charming story and mostly clever level design that puts its clever season-changing mechanic to good use. Unfortunately, a few aggressive flaws quickly sap the fun out of the entire experience, including forced backtracking; annoying one-hit-kill autoscrollers out of nowhere; and its overall short playtime. It's difficult to recommend the game overall, but it might be worth it for hardcore retro platformer fans.
Fox n Forests is a great game with a style that is a worthy tribute to the retro classics. It is a lot of fun, full of challenging enemies and puzzles.
