Have a Nice Death Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

If you love a solid challenge that gives its players a justifiable reason to be okay with a trial-and-error approach to progression, then Have a Nice Death is the perfect pick for you. Being able to experiment with even more insane builds to replace your favorites while also hearing about what an HR nightmare all the employees are in its hilarious story is just the cherry on top. It manages to create yet another engrossing experience where you’re not only okay with dying but actively welcome it, which is a hard feat for a medium that’s so often known for punishing players for just that.

Have a Nice Death may have its problems, but it’s a great experience and one worth playing if you’re a fan of the genre. Plus, it has some of the best aesthetics in the business, and the little Death character is an adorable thing.

Have a Nice Death is an absolutely fantastic time. Whilst the anima system and some lacking curses are enough of a nuisance to be noticeable, they don’t overshadow the rest of the game’s excellent qualities. Not only is it one of the best looking games I've ever played, but its roguelike loop provides a perfect base of simplicity that acts as a foundation for crunchy, fast-paced fights. The game both indulges the power fantasy of acting out the unstoppable will of Death itself whilst providing a suitably tough experience that forces strategy and rewards learning about each opponent.

Being The Grim Reaper is a hard job! Death incarnate has a lot of souls he’s responsible for but that’s what delegating is for.  Unfortunately, turning death into a fully staffed operation has come with some downsides.  Namely, Death Incorporated is now being run by a handful of operatives called “Sorrows” that are so busy on Earth that Death is being buried in paperwork and needs a break.  Have a Nice Death gives us the opportunity to play as Death as he reigns in his employees so...

Have a Nice Death is a thematic 2D rogue-lite side scroller with a lot of charm. With highly renowned games like Hades, Cult of the Lamb and Dead Cells ruling the charts, it is always exciting to get a new spin on the rogue-lite genre. Have a Nice Death delivers exactly what is needed in the space. A strong content warning is present and shouldn’t be taken lightly, because whilst Have a Nice Death looks cute and charming, there are some really dark and heavy themes throughout.

Have a Nice Death is the next game by Magic Design Studios which has been in early access for the past year. After picking up a fair amount of interest and hype leading into the official release, how does this roguelike fair in the gauntlet of like-minded titles? Pretty well, actually. Here's our review of Have a Nice Death, the exceedingly charming 2D roguelike.

Have a Nice Death is a gorgeous, weapon-filled adventure that could slice and dice its way to the top of the roguelike genre. Its almost ‘cutesy’ nature plays well against the sometimes dark themes it contains, but the vast array of weapon and spell combinations will be what draws and then keeps players within the walls of Death Inc. It has the rare ability to be enjoyable for both the high-difficulty, build-crafting RNG fans and the more casual crowd. Players will delight with its sublime art, memorable fights, and its well-crafted, lore-filled world. If someone has to be Death, Have a Nice D...

Have a Nice Death is both fun and rewarding enough that I enjoyed returning for repeat runs. There are a few things that didn't quite work, like the more repetitive level design, some of the confusing stat numbers, and some of the repetitive humor, but Magic Design Studios has still put together a compelling roguelike. The combat is buttery smooth, the art style manages to be vibrant while retaining a dreary color scheme, and there are enough secrets to keep players engaged for the long haul. It might not be Employee of the Month when it comes to roguelikes, but Have a Nice Death is strong eno...

One time on a Nintendo Direct, they decided to show off a new game called Have A Nice Death. Have A Nice Death is a rogue-lite action platformer where you play as the grim reaper, also known as Death, after getting sick of the monotony of working a desk job. Definitely relatable. You set off to clean up the souls, and make sure staff are doing their jobs. It’s a pretty simple concept for the game.

Have a Nice Death is not only this game's title, it's an interjection. It's the bully at the gaming playground. It's the ex that keeps coming back to your house to get their belongings, one thing at a time. You beat these types of games before, right? All of that is gone. Still a little buggy, but at it's price point, you'll have a hard time blaming the glitches, and spend more time telling yourself that you're not good at the game.

A good roguelike should have charm, challenge, and some sort of drip-fed progress. Have A Nice Death succeeds in two of these areas for sure. Maybe I’ve been forever ruined by Hades, but I’ve come to expect more give-and-take from my roguelikes. Even if it’s an illusion, I want to feel like I’m constantly moving forward. I recognize that most roguelikes don’t do this. They simply aren’t meant for me, a self-proclaimed scrub. The more important question, then, is Have A Nice Death the roguelike for you?

And yet despite all this, I still had no shortage of difficulty putting down the controller. “Okay, one more run” was a common refrain as I worked my way through the offices of Death Inc., chuckling at the humor of its characters, throwing myself at its bosses, and taking in the new sights after overcoming one. Have A Nice Death is sure to please roguelite fans for its playability, but it’s a tad too easy to want a bit more from it.
