A great detective game, it's not for the faint-hearted. Well-written and with multiple character paths to choose from, Lamplight City isn't for puzzle seekers but will satisfy those looking for a great mystery.

Lamplight City offers an intriguing set of mysteries and stands as a great throwback to titles like Monkey Island and Sierra’s Gabriel Knight series. The cases aren’t especially taxing, but the well-realized setting and characters add plenty of flavor and help the game feel like something more than the sum of its parts. Fans of classic adventure games should definitely give Lamplight City a look.

The progression of the overarching narrative held my interest even more. Bill’s role is delightful just for how it factors into the gameplay—investigating every object in the room is much more entertaining when you get commentary from a sarcastic ghost—but it’s also critical to the story. Miles dealing with the strain of hearing his dead partner’s voice affects his relationship with his wife, and I found myself really pulling for things to work out for all of them.
