Thankfully, Metal Slug Tactics' highlights outshine its lowlights, namely in the way it reinvents the series to deliver something fresh and unique. This allows it to become both a love letter to long-time fans and an enjoyable entry point for newcomers. The transition isn’t without its bumps, but the game’s combination of nostalgic references, strategic depth, and rogue-lite variety makes it a standout in the tactical genre.

The announcement of Metal Slug Tactics felt so weird, but at the same time, it felt so… right. Even though the franchise is known as basically the best run-and-gun arcade platformer franchise of all time (I’m sorry Contra, but you ain’t got no chance here), turning the franchise’s war-like loop into a tactical RPG felt like a genius move. Announced earlier this year, Metal Slug Tactics was something I was desperately looking forward to, especially on the Switch. Playing that game on a...

The side-scrolling shooter transforms from brainless barnstorming to thoughtful grenade tossing in a work of turn-based tactics - but its arcade soul remains intact.

The Metal Slug series is back, though not as you know it. Metal Slug Tactics swaps the series' run-and-gun shooter antics for turn-based battles, and adds in some roguelike elements to boot. It's just a shame that while there are some neat ideas here, it's not all that entertaining overall.

Metal Slug is a great fit as a turned-based strategy game, but overly luck-dependent roguelike elements and some outdated ideas for how to define enemies slow its march to war.

The Metal Slug franchise has largely been dead in recent years except for the occasional spin-off title or remake. The last mainline entry in the Metal Slug series was in 2008 on the Nintendo DS. Need I say more? When you’ve already conquered the run-and-gun genre with little evolution since then, where else is there to go? Turns out like a lot of other recent franchises spinning off, the answer is a tactics game. Metal Slug Tactics is one of the first big forays for the IP in a while a...

Metal Slug Tactics is a robust turn-based strategy game. You don’t have to be a fan of the franchise to appreciate the tactical options it presents you. While it’s not exactly the most helpful to players who might be new to the genre, the type of person who would even want to try a strategy game is naturally inquisitive anyway, so the trial by fire method of simply experimenting with your units and moves works here. The launch price is fair considering the average campaign length of around five hours, and its roguelike mechanics keep things fresh for each run....

Metal Slug Tactics is a fun and nicely-challenging strategy game, but what truly makes it stand out is how it finds a way to incorporate mechanics from the arcade games into its gameplay by placing a unique emphasis on movement. Combined with astonishing visuals (especially during the epic boss battle), it makes for an entry into the franchise that's more than worthy and one that's worth checking out whether you're a fan of the series or not. After all, you can't attack a basket of snakes in order to sic them on your enemies and not have fun...

Metal Slug Tactics injects fresh energy into the tactics genre with its dynamic, fast-paced systems. While the game introduces a range of compelling mechanics, their lack of clear explanations can hinder your strategic choices during missions. However, the thrill of initiating sync attacks encourages a more aggressive playstyle, making battles feel exhilarating. Leikir Studio has successfully reimagined a classic franchise for a new genre, and despite some issues with system clarity, the addictive gameplay loop offers a fun and innovative twist on tactical strategy.

Metal Slug Tactics makes turn-based run-and-gun work with style… most of the time.

Metal Slug Tactics combines the fundamentals of a Turn-Based Strategy with the mechanics of the series’ Run & Gun action for one of the most fun strategy games I’ve played in a while.

Metal Slug Tactics is a new take on the legendary franchise that puts side-scrolling action aside for a more in-depth tactical approach. While the combat and roguelike systems are highly engaging, it still suffers from many bugs that prevent this game from reaching greater heights.

Metal Slug Tactics faithfully adapts the beloved run-and-gun action of the franchise into a deep tactical roguelike RPG loaded with content and some of the best pixel art of the year. When one thinks about Metal Slug, it's difficult to imagine a game that isn't a side-scrolling romp filled with explosions, massive guns, and some of the coolest-looking tanks the world has never seen. Taking that concept and pivoting into a genre that's arguably the counter-opposite of a shoot-'em-up was a bold idea, but thanks to some clever mechanics, it works better than one might expect.

Metal Slug Tactics takes SNK’s iconic 2D side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter and transforms it into a 3D tactical RPG with roguelite elements that work better than expected. The game shows plenty of love for the Metal Slug series, featuring fantastic artwork, fluid animations, and engaging gameplay mechanics.

This type of game has a ceiling it can normally hit. It’s a lower-budget genre-bending revival of a beloved but older IP. Leikir Studio has managed to find an excellent blend of old and new. While it can be insanely difficult on hard, it’s just the right amount of punishing on normal. As it is available on Day One on Game Pass for Cloud, Console, and PC I think this one is an easy download or buy for any tactics fan.

Metal Slug Tactics reimagines the classic run-and-gun series as a turn-based strategy game, blending nostalgic pixel art with tactical depth. Players command familiar characters like Marco, Eri, and Fio, utilizing unique abilities and coordinating attacks to outmaneuver enemies. The game introduces roguelike elements, offering procedurally generated missions and a dynamic battlefield experience.

A fun and refreshingly light-on-its-feet tactics game successfully translates a lot of Metal Slug's charms into the turn-based genre. But it's not as natural a fit as Gears Tactics was, and an obtuse UI combined with abundant glitches hold it back.

There's a real confidence to the new step in Metal Slug Tactics that had me smiling as I saw this arcade classic being transformed into something new. The tactics genre is a natural fit for Metal Slug and this version of the classic genre embraces the roots of the franchise while taking a bold new step. While I have some issues with how clunky the UI can be when trying to pull off the perfect strategy, there's an incredibly solid foundation here and a good basis for them to continue the series on into the future.

From the moment it was announced Metal Slug Tactics was a winner in our eyes. Marrying the SNK classic with the turn-based tactics genre is a golden idea on paper. Hearing it’s a roguelike in the vein of Into the Breach was the coup de grâce for this game being anything but a banger. And we’re happy to say it lives up to those lofty expectations.

There's a decent, tactical experience in Metal Slug Tactics, but the roguelite elements and repetition that stems from that makes things feel old too quick. Messy, confusing UI and infrequent bugs also hinders this title from reaching its true potential.
