Morsels is one of those roguelike action games that feels impenetrable at first, but once you start learning its obscure language, it becomes more and more rewarding.
Morsels is a colourful yet gritty title where you play as a mouse trying to take down a league of evil cats. It doesn’t hold your hand, making it a fairly challenging experience.
Morsels provides a ton of moments of surprise and delight through its chaotic art style and surprisingly weird mini-games, but an uneven difficulty and overly obtuse items leave a bad aftertaste. While the selection of Morsels you can wield contains some incredibly fun options, there are just as many misses, and far fewer than I initially expected.
You could probably reduce Morsels to the status of a well-made genre piece, a reverse Spelunky with a streak of Noita, but there's a pervasive uncertainty - I'm still not sure what those Goyalike children are for, after seven hours of play - and the sturdiness of the rogueliking isn't what makes this compelling. While not quite the replacement for The Binding of Isaac I wanted, Morsels has a lot of depth and plenty of challenge for those seeking it.
Morsels is an ambitious indie roguelite that just doesn’t deliver. The game shines with a distinctive aesthetic identity, but between shockingly unclear mechanics, poor game balance, and unsatisfying moment-by-moment gameplay, it otherwise has little to offer.
