Neva is a profoundly moving, interactive work of art. It’s as pleasing to the eye as it is the ear, and the effort this still young studio has gone to in developing upon ideas cemented in their first game, Gris, is commendable. Without eclipsing it, Neva matches the stirring catharsis of Gris with another flash of brilliance.

Neva begins on a heartbreaking note, with a young swordswoman and her antlered wolf pup suffering the devastating loss of a loved one. Grief catalyzes a blossoming partnership between the pair, spurring them in their mission to spare a dying world from the same fate. Watching them grow closer throughout four tumultuous seasons is an emotional treat, a relationship that anchors this exceptional action platformer.

Neva is a great, concise platformer that should entertain you for a weekend or so. At around four hours for most players (and even quicker on the easier Story difficulty level), the experience doesn’t overstay its welcome, and yet some may be left wanting more. With only one main kind of collectible to grab in order to unlock the game’s best ending, it’s not even much of a chore to completely finish Neva, either. If you enjoyed GRiS, or simply want to support Nomada Studio, then Neva comes highly recommended.

I preferred Neva to Gris, though both games are triumphant and artistic video games that will probably make you cry like a baby. If you’re a lifelong pet owner like myself, Neva has the potential to hit you like a train, but it’s also a universal enough feeling to work for anyone. Neva is what happens when you let actual artists make a game. That we rarely get works like this is depressing, but there’s no sense that anything in Neva was produced according to what a suit thought would be best for the share value. Yes, Neva lacks in subtlety, but it is nonetheless a beautiful, heartfelt and evocative experience. It makes it clear up front that its goal is to make you cry, and even though you know what it’s doing, you are going to cry on cue at the end of it.
