Neva begins on a heartbreaking note, with a young swordswoman and her antlered wolf pup suffering the devastating loss of a loved one. Grief catalyzes a blossoming partnership between the pair, spurring them in their mission to spare a dying world from the same fate. Watching them grow closer throughout four tumultuous seasons is an emotional treat, a relationship that anchors this exceptional action platformer.

Neva is a great, concise platformer that should entertain you for a weekend or so. At around four hours for most players (and even quicker on the easier Story difficulty level), the experience doesn’t overstay its welcome, and yet some may be left wanting more. With only one main kind of collectible to grab in order to unlock the game’s best ending, it’s not even much of a chore to completely finish Neva, either. If you enjoyed GRiS, or simply want to support Nomada Studio, then Neva comes highly recommended.

Gorgeous visuals and an ethereal soundtrack invite players into the world of Neva. Yet these welcoming aesthetics are just the floral display surrounding a game with fast-paced combat, inventive platforming, and a touching story of the bond between warrior and wolf.

Nomada Studio follows up on the striking Gris with an effort that's poignant and precise, if maybe just a tad melodramatic.

Neva is another winner from Nomada Studio, but it's also much more than that. It's a drop-dead gorgeous game with truly fun platforming action, puzzles and combat, with hauntingly-beautiful moments. But the titular character is the true highlight, easily encapsulating the biggest strengths as you see this wolf grow up alongside Alba. It's a journey of motherhood that takes the form of one of the year's best platformers, and just one of the year's best games, period.

With its sumptuous art and rousing soundtrack, Neva sure is a treat for the eyes and ears. Its story will pull on your heartstrings, too. It's just a shame that its gameplay is basic at best and it often borders on being simply dull.

Every once in a while, there’s a game that is able to not only catch your attention visually, but is also able to deliver a rewarding and satisfying experience on a deeply emotional level. Spiritfarer, is one example that I still think about quite often for its (mostly) optimistic view of passing on to the next plane of existence. Then there are other games like Nomada Studio’s GRIS, which has you facing that same concept head-on, but in a much more raw and emotional way. GRIS left an imp...

Creators of the visually arresting and incredibly touching GRIS, the talented crew at Nomada Studio are back with their next adventure, exploring themes of love, identity, growth, trust and courage. This time, the focus is on a young woman named Alba, who is travelling through a decaying world with her mystical and adorable wolf companion, Neva. In this heartfelt story with truly gorgeous visuals, you’ll work together to navigate a collapsing landscape full of natural beauty and hidden dang...

Neva is a sublime experience, using a deceptively minimalist approach to tell one of the most heartfelt stories of the generation.

Neva is a beautiful platformer about nature and decay that takes Nomada Studio to the next level. The platforming and combat are imprecise enough to distract from a world of dangerous beauty - but not so much that you won't enjoy the journey.

“Neva may not be the most complex 2D platformer, but it still might make you cry.”

Normally, a super-short game with minimalist mechanics would make me say something along the lines of "Neva is great, but it won't be for everyone." But I truly think that everyone should play Neva at some point; it's hard to imagine someone not feeling profound emotion from this trim but unforgettable release, which now sits comfortably on the short list of video games that have brought tears to my eyes. If it has captured your attention in any way, then it's safe to say that it's worth your time. It's certainly worth far more than the $20 Devolver Digital and...

Neva is a game that builds on the platforming prowess of its predecessor GRIS, offering powerful pastel visuals, incredible use of color and flora, and sublime set-pieces to tell a powerful story where your bond is everything. The game offers a newfound dynamism, trading in the label of a puzzle platformer for a more traditional adventure platforming approach. Sadly, the game fails to hit the narrative heights of its predecessor, and also fails to truly get the most out of each mechanic presented. But despite this, Neva is a captivating, visually jaw-dropping indie that is simply too good to ignore.

Despite feeling somewhat like well-trod narrative ground, Neva is a beautiful game, skilfully made with a lot of heart. The bond it fosters between you and your canine companion cannot be understated, and is likened to that of a parent and child. Alba becomes the parent figure, and the protector during Neva‘s youth.

They do this through beautifully crafted animation, vibrant backgrounds, and a whimsical yet powerful soundtrack. The notion of games as an art form has been a topic of discussion for years. While some argue that it’s simply entertainment, others focus on how the combination of interactivity and visual storytelling communicate messages like no other. With the ability to elicit raw emotion and delve into complex themes, the medium offers a rich canvas for narrative exploration. Nomada Studio’s previous release, Gris, exemplifies this argument and Neva reinforces it, to solidify that video games can transcend entertainment.
