Patapon 2 Remastered Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
One of the PSP’s best series has slowly been finding new life on the PlayStation 4, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s been over two years since the first game came to the PS4. Patapon 2 Remastered continues these fierce warriors’ journey toward Earthend with you leading the tribe as their Almighty Patapon.
I remember very little about my PlayStation Portable days. I remember buying Tiger Woods Golf and even getting a movie on UMD, but unfortunately, this is about all I remember. Not soon after purchasing the console, a cleaning crew employee stole it off my work desk. As a result, I have no nostalgic anchor to Patapon or Patapon 2. I wish I had because I have a feeling I would have fallen in love with Patapon back then.
Initially on the humble PSP, Patapon 2 gets a new lease of life on the Playstation 4, as Patapon 2 Remastered. The first Patapon has also already been remastered, with its sequel continuing the journey to Earthend. Without further ado, let’s delve into this review of this frankly, quite adorable game. Drum to the beat of Pata-Pata-Pata-PON!
Believe it or not, Patapon 2 originally released over a decade ago and now, it's finally been remastered for PS4 so here's my review.
Patapon 2 Remastered has been in the works for what feels like an eternity, but the sequel has finally marched onto PlayStation 4. Much like Sony's other unusual PSP titles, the rhythm/strategy hybrid is now available on the flagship home console with updated visuals and 4K support for those with a PS4 Pro. Despite the first game's arrival on current-gen hardware in 2017, this is a series that remains incredibly niche and relatively obscure, but its interesting blend of genres and cutesy characters means it continues to stand out in 2020.
Patapon 2 Remastered brings the best game in the series to modern consoles, and along with it some nice new features and quality of life changes. It wont convert you if weren't already a believer, but it gives existing fans a fantastic new reason to play through this classic once again.
A fun and funky sequel, Patapon 2’s bolstered roster of cheerful eyeball folk make for another welcome trip soundtracked to the beat of Pata Pata Pata Pon. It’s a shame then that the remaster feels incomplete, offering an experience that’s fundamentally less comprehensive than the PSP original.
Sony has always had a tough time solidifying their gaming legacy. For so long, the PlayStation thrived on third party releases while their first-party lineup took a backseat. Franchises stall out across the generational line and mascots become tied to individual consoles rather than the PlayStation brand as a whole. Even when Sony does try to present and preserve what came before, it can come across as half-hearted. That is part of the feeling I get when playing through Patapon 2 Remastered, a PS4 rerelease of a PSP original from 2008. A unique hybrid between rhythm and strategy, this portable...
Just as unique and charming as it was over a decade ago
We want to emphasize that 5 will always be the “average” number, not 7. So by far, it’s 50% great and it’s also 50% bad.
