“Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a step in the right direction for the aging series, even if its technical limits can't always support its ambitions.”

There's room for improvement in a potential Pokemon Legends: Arceus sequel, but what's here will still keep Pokemon fans busy for hours on end. Pokemon Legends: Arceus's gameplay is simple but incredibly rewarding, stripping away much of the tediousness that has plagued recent entries in the series to focus on what's fun. Those who grew up with Pokemon should like it especially, as while it makes dramatic changes to the core formula, it somehow feels truer to the spirit of Pokemon than the older releases.

For the first time since I was a child, I finally feel excited for the future of Pokemon. While it's true that Pokemon Legends: Arceus has some problems that do feel inexcusable in this day and age, there's no doubt that the game is a milestone for the franchise. I can only hope that Game Freak decides to build on the ideas that work well here and grow the concept into something even better.

Pokémon games haven't changed their formula much in the last twenty five years, relying on side games for experimentation. Arceus breathes a new life into the franchise and shows how reinventing key gameplay aspects can revolutionize the Pokémon experience.

Pokémon has been on a warpath the past year or so. Between the insane continued success of the trading card game, and the continued success of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the full release of Pokémon Unite, and the remakes for Diamond and Pearl. You wouldn’t be wrong if you thought it was time for a small break from the Pokémon series, but oh no because this time it’s going balls to the wall with Pokémon Legends: Arceus. For anyone living under a rock since the announcement, Pokémon L...

Pokemon Legends Arceus is a game that no one was sure what to expect from it, but what they’ll get from playing it is a game that is truly an experience, one long-desired by Pokemon fans. Filling up your Pokedex and exploring the Pokemon world has never been so much fun.

Falling from the sky, out of a rift in space and time, Pokémon Legends: Arceus almost shocks with how divergent it is from the series. For many, many decades, the mainline Pokémon games have been turn-based, monster-catching RPGs inflated with content and simplified mechanics. While it certainly isn’t the most visually appealing, the new foundations of Pokémon are remarkably refreshing and straight-up fun—but Game Freak still needs to nurture this latest chapter.

Pokemon Legends Arceus is the most imaginative and absorbing Pokemon to date, though Hisui itself is disappointingly bare.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus still has some lingering flaws from the series' rough transition to 3D, but is still an incredibly fun time from start to finish. Catching and battling Pokémon hasn’t been this fun in over a decade, and despite the wealth of things to do in Hisui I’m still hungry for more.

Pokemon Legends Arceus is indisputably the best game in the series in a very long time, and a welcome and triumphant revitalization of the long standing formula. For the first time in a very long time, there is reason to be excited for the future of the franchise.

Long-time fans of the Pokémon franchise should be very excited about the future of the Pokémon games, even if not everything in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a home run. Despite the flaws, I really enjoyed my time and can’t wait to see what comes next!

It doesn’t matter how good Pokemon Legends: Arceus is. Let’s get that out of the way first. It will inevitably be one of the highest-selling games on the Switch, and it will be lauded and praised because it didn’t recycle the same formula the franchise has used for over two decades. It’ll be touted as a “flawed but firm foundation for the future of Pokemon.” My question, though, is how many more foundations does this series need? My rose-tinted glasses are fogging up.

Catching as many Pokémon as you can, learning more about them, and training them to be stronger in battle are the very foundations of Game Freak’s iconic RPG series, but few titles exemplify those core concepts as powerfully as this latest outing. Pokémon Legends: Arceus tasks you with exploring a bygone era of the Sinnoh region, then known as Hisui, and gives you more ways than ever to complete your Pokédex. While some elements don’t feel like their final forms, I love where this new direction takes the Pokémon series.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a refreshing take on the Pokemon formula, stripping back the game to focus on the titular creatures with such great success. It's just let down by the graphics.

There’s still a lot of room for improvement but this is easily the best Pokémon game for several years and a positive new direction that the mainline games would be wise to follow.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a departure from the prototypical Pokemon formula, abandoning or reinventing old features in order to offer something new and unique. While it leaves a bit to be desired from a technical standpoint, there’s just so much to enjoy. A clever overhaul to the battle system, improvements to exploration, and a story that dives deep into franchise lore makes Pokemon Legends: Arceus an experience that will appeal to longtime fans, as well as those who may have grown tired of the series’ reliance on the status quo.

Pokémon Legends Arceus is a must-play game for fans of the franchise. Not only is it the very best Pokémon game yet, but it elegantly takes the formula and flips it on its head, creating a unique new challenge that fans will love. With the nods to the anime and Pokémon games abound, Arceus feels very much like a love letter from Game Freak.

Combined with a unique ingredient — the most successful franchise of all time, beloved by hundreds of millions — the developer proves Pokémon works as a modern RPG and that future installments could potentially outmatch other games in the genre.
