The first Redout was released a few years ago, and despite its promising premise, being inspired by antigrav racers like F-Zero and (most noticeably) Star Wars Episode I: Racer, it felt underwhelming. I say this because each exotic track is introduced with a bit of lore by way of the smooth voice-over. This is unusual for a racing game but I found it weirdly wonderful, and it had me wondering what else is going on beyond the colorful death-trap tracks I'm not really enjoying. Is there an RPG down in New Tokyo? A first-person shooter on Mars? A stealth-horror in the depths of the Mariana Trench? Redout 2 is a beautiful-looking, anti-gravity racing game that has you driving at ridiculously fast speeds. This difficulty level is pretty high, but if you are willing to practise and hone your skills you will definitely be rewarded.

If you feel the need for speed, then Redout 2 has you covered. 34BigThings’ sequel comes six years after the first entry, inspired heavily by F-Zero and WipEout. This sci-fi racing series is known for reviving that feeling of extreme acceleration in futuristic worlds, but Redout 2 takes a few too many wrong turns.

I love racing games, especially the futuristic racer genre. You can thank FAST Racing League for that (and, to a lesser extent, Star Wars Racer). The thrill of accelerating to impossibly high speeds on gravity-defying courses is just exhilarating. So, when Redout 2 was announced, I was hooked on it right from the get-go.

While the core gameplay of Redout 2 is solid, the difficulty spikes will suck much of the fun out of the experience for some. And while steadily developing your ship helps players adjust to the increase in speed over the course of the career, it’s a strange and unfortunate choice to not offer a range of starting craft, tuned to multiple play styles. With a bit of work, then, Redout 2 could really stand out in the anti-gravity racer genre. But until then, it’s hard to recommend to all but the brave and the hardcore.

Redout 2 is a game that looks amazingly sleek and fun through pictures, descriptions, and videos. The facade is dropped when you actually play the game for yourself, and find a slew of poor design choices, unnecessary difficulty curves, incomplete features, and repetitive gameplay. This doesn't even include the atrociously implemented HDR that burned my eyes and gave me a headache. Even if you're a fan of the genre, I recommend sticking with the first Redout until this sequel is heavily patched or discounted.

Ultimately, Redout 2 takes the anti-grav racing genre very seriously. If it weren’t purely fantastical I’d be inclined to call it a simulation racer, but I came to appreciate its demand for mastery of its mechanics. It’s possible that fans of similar games in the genre might bounce off of this one, but I truly believe with enough time it will blow past its competition. The game is out now for $29.99 on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X | S, with a Nintendo Switch release in July.

Lacking sophisticated difficulty adjustments lowers Redout 2's appeal to casual players. Aside from modifying sensitivity or remapping controls, there's no way to make the game more forgiving. Players are forced to make fast, precise, and accurate inputs at absurd speeds. The game makes no attempt to explain the controls, so players are left to fend for themselves. There are also no accessibility options, which is a pretty major oversight.

Redout 2 is a niche product that won't be for everyone. However, if you happen to fall into its target audience, then it'll offer enough to keep you entertained for some time. Just be prepared to fail over and over before things start getting fun.

A successful tribute to F-Zero and WipEout where going fast never stops being fun. Its surprisingly meaty career mode more than justifies the price tag but it may struggle to win over more casual racing enthusiasts.
