For many, Rogue Legacy's more tangible sense of progression elevated it above other titles in the rogue-like indie boom. Pioneering the rogue-lite some 10 years ago, the first game was a very stern challenge, but one that you'd eventually overcome thanks to meaningful, permanent upgrades. The loop of running through the game, using the gold you earned to become more powerful, then doing it all again is undeniably brilliant, and the added layer of each character having unique traits made each attempt memorable. Rogue Legacy 2 recaptures all of that, but builds on that simple design with an unfathomable amount...

To end my ceaseless rambling and gushing, Rogue Legacy 2 takes what the original built and surpasses it on all fronts. In almost a decade between releases the small team at Cellar Door Games managed to go from helping to craft and contribute to a booming subgenre of gaming, to reflecting the scene’s popularity to craft this grand, and well-thought-out sequel. Good on them.

Rogue Legacy 2 is — to put it simply — a banger. While it’s not a game-changing revelation, it manages to follow up on everything that made the original great and makes it bigger and better. Even once you've bested the bosses, you've barely scratched the surface of what this has to offer, considering the in-depth New Game Plus mode and the wealth of content contained across all available classes and options. Whether you loved the original Rogue Legacy or never played it but like a good roguelike, this is a game you simply can't afford to miss.

There’s nothing stranger than someone trying to tell you they improved on your favorite dessert. Like, when it comes to chocolate mint ice cream, I simply cannot picture something better in terms of what I want when I’m interested in a sweet. For years, people have tried to show me a way that they can improve upon the little sugary joy I let into my dietary parthenon. “Try it with a dollop of whipped cream, blend it with Baileys, melt it and ingest it intravenously.” All have led to m...

Rogue Legacy 2 doesn’t make the biggest initial splash. In fact, at first glance, you’d be hard-pressed to see what’s changed from 2013’s Rogue Legacy to Cellar Door Games’ sequel. Despite switching from 2D sprites to a 3D rendered world, it veers close to the previous game’s aesthetic. While this lack of deviation from the original’s template proves to be a theme throughout Rogue Legacy 2, there are a lot of changes that add up to a bigger, better version of the original in almost every way.

I love when excellent games get long-awaited sequels and thankfully, Rogue Legacy 2 was worth the wait as it's GOTY material.

Rogue Legacy 2 is an enormous beast of an adventure, packed with fast combat, great platforming and endless replayability. It's the kind of game that can be actively difficult to stop playing, with the spoils from one run opening up new opportunities in the next that can be difficult to resist checking out. While progress can be slow it rarely turns into a grind, with most hits and the inevitable death of the current hero feeling fair and avoidable if only you'd been just a bit more skilled. The generations come and go with each one sacrificing a member to...

Proving lightning can indeed strike twice, developer Cellar Door Games have released their followup to the 2013 hit, Rogue Legacy. This action-packed sequel expands upon the lineage set out by its predecessor, practically bursting at the seams with new content and mechanics. After previewing the title following its Early Access debut in August of 2020, I was excited to jump back in and see if the game’s promising opening carried through to an excellent full release.

I knew from my limited time with the Early Access version that Rogue Legacy 2 would be great, but I didn’t necessarily think it would go on to become one of the best games of 2022 and one of my favorite roguelite games. The competition is fierce, but it’s ready.

It’s impossible to be disappointed with Rogue Legacy 2. As a sequel, it does everything it should: keep the spirit of the original in tact, while bolstering the experience with new content. Bigger and more interesting areas to explore mean you’ll be battling your way through Rogue Legacy 2 for much longer, and the new suite of character classes makes it more interesting than ever. Add to the mix new challenges, more complex traversal mechanics and more ways than ever to upgrade your character, and you’ve got a winning formula.

The original Rogue Legacy was an incredible step forward for rogue-lite games. It helped to establish a lot of cool elements that games after it would mimic in many ways. I wouldn’t say Rogue Legacy 2 reinvents the wheel here. Instead, it polishes that wheel to a sheen, gives it fresh treads, some fancy spinners, and makes it an all-around better version of the wheel we knew and loved. If you loved the first Rogue Legacy, then Rogue Legacy 2 is very likely to capture your heart as well. If you’re jumping into this series for the first time at...

Rogue Legacy 2 is excellent in every conceivable metric. The gameplay is fast, tight, and feels fair. It’s simplistic but beautiful graphically. The music is excellent, and the story is intriguing but not in the way. At $25 US this is something every fan of the genre either new or old should give a try. It takes every positive from the solid first game and improves upon it while sanding away many of its rough edges.

Rogue Legacy 2 does everything a sequel should. It builds on what was already well done in its predecessor while reworking any ideas that weren't executed as well. Cellar Door Games has made something both franchise fans and newcomers should be extremely excited to play.
