It’s easy to get lost in the pleasure behind clearing an entire fortress in Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts. While the overall story isn’t compelling, the gameplay is gripping.

In most cases, I would make my best attempt to give a game the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, bugs or shoddy graphics be damned. But not this time. SGWC is a mess from top to bottom, and even its moments of enjoyment are not worth the head-spinning number of missteps.

The sniping genre is a fairly popular niche of games these days, and games like Sniper Elite 4 make it easy to see why. You’re dropped into a playground and given enhanced skills to rain hell down upon unsuspecting enemies. The last time we saw the Sniper Ghost Warrior series, things were kind of mundane. It didn't take long at all for Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts to blow my expectations out of the water. In the very first mission I was crawling through snowy mountains, silently assassinating guards and stealing technology and trade secrets. I've played Sniper Ghost Warrior games before, and I've never been impressed. I've barely even been amused. The Sniper Ghost Warrior series has always struggled to find its footing over the years, being a series that has always been unsure of what it wanted to be, with the last one being a Far Cry clone of sorts that didn’t quite hit the heights of that series. However, Contracts takes a new approach and hopefully going forward, is what Sniper Ghost Warrior strives to be.

For those that want to drop in and shoot some enemies, Sniper Ghost Warrior: Contracts may be worth checking out, so long as they can ignore the many bugs present in the game. Even then, its an incredibly tough sell. Some early E3 demos made it seem as though this would be a first-person Hitman game, but the end result is disappointing and frustrating.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts is a streamlined sniping simulator focused on specific objectives within open-ended mini sandbox levels. It gets off to a weak start with its forgettable story and tedious backtracking, but more than makes up for it with satisfying bullet physics, a delectable kill cam, and plenty of gadgets to help you kill from a distance.

While Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts‘ missions simply ask you to pretty much do the same things in numerous environments, it’s hard to not get drawn into the action. Moving from one area to another, aware that soldiers could be waiting around the next corner or that a sniper may have you in their sights, makes for a very atmospheric experience, and it’s one that’s only heightened by the detailed environments that you find yourself exploring.
