Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles are back, with two old friends! This expansion of last year's solid Sonic Mania boasts some new features, plus remixed stages. Is it enough to warrant another purchase? Ready our Sonic Mania Plus review to find out.
My first gaming console was the Sega Genesis. Because of that, Sonic was a big part of my childhood as I loved playing his titles. With Sonic Mania Plus, not on
Sonic Mania brings fans back into the 2D world of platform games with nostalgic pixel-style art and core classic gameplay by reimagining iconic Zones and Acts from Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.
Sonic Mania Plus is an excellent addition to an already fine game and easily the best Sonic game in years.

The last two decades or so haven’t been all that kind to Sega’s Blue Blur; once associated with titles that could arguably stand almost shoulder to shoulder
Overall, Sonic Mania Plus is a great game. While the Plus part really only gives you two new characters and a harder version of the game, current Sonic Mania owners will only have to pay five dollars for the DLC which isn't too bad. Even 30 dollars for those wanting a physical version is still worth it for the main game alone if you don't already have it. Either way, fans of Sonic who haven't played this yet should definitely pick it up at some point.
Despite my few grievances, it’s hard to complain about what is basically totally and completely free content for players who already own a copy of Sonic Mania. And folks who are purchasing Sonic Mania Plus and playing it for the first time are getting the total package at no additional fee. If the Sonic Mania series just kept releasing new content in this form several more times before coming out with a true sequel, I would definitely not complain. Sonic Mania Plus cranks the game up to eleven with its new content and it is a must-play for fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2D platformers.
The ‘Plus’ additions are minor but this is still a touching, and highly playable, labour of love by fans that understand Sonic The Hedgehog better than Sega themselves.
The new Angel Island Zone is just icing on the cake. If you've already played through Sonic Mania before, there's ample reason to pick Sonic Mania Plus up too, especially if you're a fan of the Blue Blazer. There's enough new content to digest, and the art book is pretty great, even if it's just a little trinket. Now... how long do we have to wait for a proper sequel?
Everyone's favourite blue hedgehog has had his share of ups and downs over the decades. Thankfully, Sonic Mania is a delightful return to form and this Plus version adds even more fun times to his latest adventure.
Sonic Mania Plus took a well-made game and made it even better, with two interesting new characters and remixed levels. The new content seems a little more geared for the superfan rather than the newcomer, which at the end of the day, is totally okay because whether you bought Mania last year or you’re only just getting to it now, it is still worth checking out. It still feels very weird to say that I like playing as Ray more than playing as Sonic because it’s so much fun flying around levels as a flying squirrel.
Sonic Mania Plus is well worth the $30 price tag, especially if you want to play the best Sonic game in years.
If you enjoyed the original Sonic Mania, this Plus release should be an easy sell as it provides new characters and ways to play the game. If you missed out on it the first time, this is the perfect reason to pick the title back up and give it a go. This is the best Sonic effort in years as the developers managed to blend the things that made classic Sonic games so great in the first place.
For five bucks as a digital upgrade all of these Sonic Mania Plus additions are a no-brainer. Sure, encore and maybe the multiplayer updates would have been added as free DLC in some circles, but the new characters and the package as a whole props up one of the best platformers of 2017 for a more than reasonable price.
Last year, Sega blew everyone away with Sonic Mania. For a lot of Sonic fans, the game felt like the second coming of their beloved blue blur. Now, a whole year later, they’ve delivered what feels like the definitive version of that experience with Sonic Mania Plus. Yet there’s no denying that this is more of an upgrade than a new game. The question then becomes, is that enough?
I’m a huge Sonic fan, and despite SEGA’s various attempts to innovate gameplay, Sonic remains my childhood hero and favorite game franchise. However, my faith took a hit with Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. I longed for consistency and improvement in the franchise.
The physical version of Sonic Mania Plus includes some neat goodies for longtime Sonic and Sega fans. The small art book provides collectors with an insightful look at the visual design of Mania, while the reversible Genesis cover will pull at even the most hardened Sega kid’s heartstrings.
Last year, 90’s icon Sonic the Hedgehog celebrated his 25th Anniversary with a one-two punch of games. There was the official entry to the Sonic series the “big budget” Sonic Team produced: 3D epic Sonic Forces. The other was a Christian Whitehead produced (with Sonic Team support) fully 2D entry designed as a celebration of Sonic The Hedgehog’s 16 bit heritage named Sonic Mania. Released only as digital download, the idea I suppose was to have Sonic Mania release first as an appetise...
Sonic Mania Plus offers a number of quality of life improvements, but the Encore Mode features some questionable design decisions. Those looking for more Sonic could do far worse than this title, but don’t expect the extras to live up to the lofty standards set by Mania Mode.
Easily one of the most satisfying and fun experiences you could have on Switch and any system was Sonic Mania. The return to roots for Sega’s Blue Blur wasn’t
