Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
I don't dare to describe the events that set off these emotional detonations in my heart and mind—not before the game's even released, anyway. David Gaider has already earned my top spot among video game writers for his work on the first three Dragon Age games, and I daresay he's outdone himself. All I can do is tell you that Stray Gods is a revolutionary visual novel without peer, and even if you're not really into that genre, musical theater, or the Greek pantheon, I couldn't recommend it more.
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is one-of-a-kind in the best way, excelling on all fronts — narrative and musical. It's a must-play for lovers of theatre, Greek mythology, and story-rich experiences.
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is a visual and auditory delight filled with superb musical performances.
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical does an excellent job of blending video games and musical theater in a way that should appeal to virtually everyone. Excellent storytelling and a masterfully crafted soundtrack combined with incredible visuals give a new take on Greek mythology.
Visual novels and stage musicals come together in almost harmony.
It’s a shame that the songs in Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical didn’t have quite the impact on us that we hoped, but it might not be the case for everyone. Still, while we won’t be rushing to listen to its soundtrack on any streaming platforms, we’ve very much enjoyed our time with the game, and we’ll no doubt be returning to it for another playthrough or two in the future.
If you love video games and musicals, then you should march to the beat of Stray Gods to immerse yourself in this canorous world filled with mystical elements. Even players who want something different in choice-based games can change the tune through the unique lyric mechanics.
Summerfall Studios’ Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is one of the most unique games of the year. Creating a musical is already a colossal undertaking. But turning one into interactive art altered by player choice? Even more daunting. While it doesn’t come together as smoothly as one may hope, there’s enough promise and payoff to make this a successful experiment.
Stray Gods is at times a heartwarming and expertly crafted musical experience. However, certain narrative choices, along with some minor audio and performance issues, leave the game feeling like it could have spend a little more time in the oven.
A fascinating but flawed experimental musical game that fails to live up to some heavenly potential.
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical aspires to ambition it can’t quite reach
Stray Gods is an epic tale of gods, magic, and a millennium-long journey to rediscover one’s purpose. Dive into an urban fantasy world of music and adventure, where reality and the supernatural collide in strange and nefarious ways. You play as Grace, recently bequeathed with the power of song by the Last Muse who chose to pass you her gift before dying in your arms. Armed with the power of spectacular musical numbers, you have one week to prove your innocence in the Muse's death before a group of mythological beings known as the Chorus - take your life as punishment.
