The more I played Super Mario Bros Wonder, the more I fell in love with its whimsicality and endless redefinition of what Mario can be. It’s a glorious reimagining of Nintendo’s most iconic franchise. It takes the ingenuity and innovation that made Mario’s 3D escapades some of gaming’s greatest achievements and finally introduces them into the side-scrolling world. Wonder is everything I wanted it to be, and might be the most inventive 2D platformer Nintendo has ever made.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder takes the best parts of past 2D Mario games and builds on them with new characters, gameplay mechanics and upgraded visuals. There’s something here for both fans of the series and newcomers alike, with local and online multiplayer to keep you coming back after you’ve finished the main story.

As hard as it is to believe, it has been over a decade since the last traditional Mario 2D platformer that isn’t a re-release. Clearly, Nintendo has been biding their time as they have now given us one of the greatest entries in the series to date with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Outside of the lackluster boss battles, everything else in this game is superb and truly exemplifies what a great Mario game should be. While some people may be awaiting a follow-up to Odyssey, Super Mario Bros. Wonder rejuvenates the 2D side of the series with a game that...

Wonder is the sense of amazement or admiration that comes from something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar. When we use the word, we often attribute it to the celestial sights, or to a child’s first experiences, however benign. It’s a word thrown around too easily with the adjective “wonderful”, and the almost superfluous way that we attach it to something less than remarkable, i.e. “You were wonderful mowing the lawn.” The true sense of the word – something at almost scares ...

2D Mario games occupy a weird space in my brain. It’s important that they innovate, but not too much. Otherwise, they lose something ethereal that I can’t define. They’re tied to the past in a powerful way, so much so that they’re automatically nostalgic. There’s a tightrope act that each new game must perform in order to satisfy me. Anyways, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is out, and it totally nails that balancing act. This game feels timeless and brand new at the same time.

Overall, what makes Super Mario Bros Wonder special is the life, polish, and vibrancy that players have come to expect from Mario games. Super Mario Bros Wonder has a simple yet charming story, beautiful environments, and fun characters. On top of this, addictive gameplay and the exciting, chaotic Wonder Flowers are some of the most fun I’ve had with 2D Mario games in years. Finally, the entire package of this wonderful game is complete with excellent graphics and audio. If you are a Mario fan, this game is a must-buy. However, if you’re new to the series, I highly recommend...

Mario is known for surprising you with new ideas and strong game design. Super Mario Bros. Wonder contains both in spades. Although it executes on the element of surprise in a way I hesitate to call an outright innovation, it always supports the strengths of both the expected and unexpected.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is arguably the best 2D platformer from Nintendo. Its range in difficulty makes it a game everyone can enjoy, especially with invincible characters like Yoshi and Nabbit. The co-op makes for a hilarious and fun family game night. Completionists and challenge runners are also in for a treat, as Mario Wonder is bursting at the seams with content.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder sets a new standard for the world of 2D Mario games. The new features provide more creativity than ever before, with the unique effects of Wonder Flowers introducing their own challenges while helping make up for the game's few shortcomings. If future titles continue to improve on the systems introduced in Wonder, the next 2D Mario game could fully surpass even the most beloved NES and SNES titles.

It's no exaggeration to say that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is one of the greatest Mario titles to come out in the last fifteen years, likely since New Super Mario Bros. DS itself. The only real complaint to be had is that we wish there were even more beautiful and fantastic levels to play after the ones that are there have all been beaten. What Nintendo has crafted here is a title with over 38 years of love for their most-iconic platforming series. It's been a long time since we've had a Mario platformer so reminiscent of the much older...

“Wahoo-ing” his way into our lives for over 40 years now, the Mario brand is synonymous with quality and a flagship of not just Nintendo’s catalogue, but gaming and pop culture as a whole. Taking a well-trodden, 2D sidescroller formula and finding a way to make it interesting again is no easy undertaking. Yet Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s unique and varied approach to the genre finds a way to go beyond interesting, keeping you captivated and hooked as you await that next, wondrous gamepl...

Super Mario Bros Wonder returns to the portly plumber’s traditional 2D side-scrolling, level-based, roots for the first time in a decade; at least properly. We’ve had re-releases and a double dose of choosing our own adventure in Super Mario Maker, but haven’t had a proper New Super Mario game that was actually new since the Wii U’s launch in 2012.

As a series that has been around for nearly four decades, Super Mario Bros. should have shown signs of slowing down years ago. But continuous thoughtful reinvention has helped the franchise remain a genre leader. Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. Wonder puts a fresh new spin on the classic Mario side-scroller with wild and trippy level transformations. It's still Mario at its core, but it's fun not knowing what to expect from each level. This could be the start of a bright new era for 2D Mario games.
Read Full ReviewAs we sit down to write this review, there’s a temptation – one that Nintendo has perhaps anticipated and therefore wisely forbidden us from giving in to – to simply list all of the completely bonkers things we witnessed in Super Mario Bros. Wonder in one rambling outpouring of excitement.

In many ways, Wonder’s success is built upon the numerous iterations of past 2D Mario titles. The core idea of tight platforming across stages has been nailed down for so long that each new entry is able to iterate in more granular ways, even if it doesn’t innovate on a larger scale. Wonder doesn’t reinvent the wheel that is the Mario game, but it gives it a heck of a tune-up.

With over a decade since the last core 2D entry in the fabled franchise, fans have been left to wonder what might be next for traditional side-scrolling Mario games for some time. The New Super Mario Bros. games never quite measured up to the creativity of the plumber’s 3D outings, and frankly, Super Mario Maker largely made that series obsolete. Thankfully, fans no longer have to wonder about Nintendo’s next step because, well, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is almost here.
