Tactics Ogre is the game I should have played, but never did. Shining Force is one of my favorite games of all time, Final Fantasy Tactics is the best Final Fantasy bar none, and Fire Emblem: Awakening is a modern classic. I love JRPGs, I love tactical strategy games, so games that bridge that gap are made for me. Yet, despite its fame, I never got around to trying Tactics Ogre. I missed the original release, and then the re-release for the PSP as well (despite catching Final Fantasy Tactics ...

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is an incredible re-imagining of an awesome game and it feels perfect to play on the Steam Deck.

For the most part, Tactic Ogre: Reborn is a good game. Heck, it's a great game. But my run took me headfirst into what feels like the cheapest and most unfair change of mechanics that I can remember in my entire personal gaming history. The entire playing experience was spoiled as a result. With the review finished, I am now deleting this game from my hard drive and never returning. I feel betrayed by a terrible design choice and look at the dozens of hours to get to this point as a waste of my time.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn remains an incredibly impressive strategy RPG with new enhancements making it all the better, though Square Enix’s smoothing filter does a bad job with the sprites.

Tactics Ogre is a genre-defining SRPG that has certainly stood the test of time and it's now been Reborn for modern audiences.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a lovingly rebuilt remake, and one that all tactical RPG fans should experience.

With improvements in literally every single area of the game, Tactics Ogre: Reborn is the new standard for remasters.

Tactics Ogre Reborn is the best overall way to enjoy this classic game. Some may prefer the older versions keeping the original pixel art, while this version smooths out the rough edges in ways that may not be for everyone. The addition of voice acting helps tell the story and give it a greater sense of pathos and it's good work overall. The story is a serious one and no one plays anything for laughs. Reborn offers up a new way to enjoy a legendary title and shows off just how perfectly-crafted it was to begin with. It's a minor shame that the original game isn't included here for historical purposes, but what we have here is largely the best way to play it outside of the filtered pixel art. Tactics Ogre Reborn is a remarkable tactical RPG and a landmark entry in the genre over 25 years after its original release.

While Reborn is largely an excellent re-release of Tactics Ogre (again), many of its gameplay alterations give it new flaws that will have me making caveats in recommending it (again).

Graceful and steadfast, the grandfather of tactical RPGs has still got it.

One of the grandfathers of tactical role-playing returns with an ambitious new remaster, that includes a surprising number of improvements and only a few missteps.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a treasure of both classic tactical RPG design and modern sensibilities. I really like the quality-of-life features that make it so much easier to play and stay on the path of the story without much padding. I can also appreciate that this game also contains some tough-as-nails challenges that take an incredible amount of dedication to overcome. In between all that, it’s also just a great story and I really appreciate the Chariot Tarot system allowing you to see the paths untaken at any point you desire. If you want a great tactical RPG, this is not only the forerunner to many favorites, it’s also well-polished for a new generation.

Not much of a glow-up from Tactics Ogre's PSP remake in 2010, but this is still an engrossing turn-based tactics RPG that will keep you battling for hours and hours and hours and hours...

November 10, 2022 Read Review

For all its murky mechanics and slow pace, Tactics Ogre: Reborn still blends satisfying combat with a top-tier story in a way that few games can match. If you’re a fan of the tactical RPG genre and want a serious challenge, there’s simply no reason not to play this game. But newcomers may want to start with something more approachable, or at least keep waiting for that Final Fantasy Tactics remake we’re all hoping for.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a return to the golden age of isometric strategy RPGs, which, paradoxically, it helped to create. Building upon the rock solid foundations of 1995 Super Nintendo release Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and the 2011 PSP remake of the same name, Reborn, in turn, makes everything old new again. With gorgeous visuals, streamlined quality-of-life improvements and other enhancements, this is the definitive Tactics Ogre experience fans have been waiting for.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is exactly what fans could have wanted from a remaster. Though not all of its changes improve the experience, the majority are welcome improvements that help elevate the experience to a new level. This is a must play for fans of the original, and easily the best possible point of entry for newcomers who want to get into the series.

New features, gorgeous presentation, and a stone-cold classic in the middle? Yeah, Tactics Ogre: Reborn is essential.

An exhaustive reworking of a foundational dark fantasy epic, with some quietly radical new ideas.

Despite being wildly influential, there are some classic games whose ultimate fate is to remain in obscurity, appreciated only by a dedicated but small fanbase that keeps their legacy alive any way they can. This is definitely the case of Yasumi Matsuno's Ogre Battle series, one of the finest tactical and strategy role-playing game series ever made, whose standout entries Let Us Cling Together and Knight of Lodis are still widely appreciated decades after their release. Following Square Enix's acquisition of Quest, however, the series entered a limbo from which has yet to come out, as, since the acquisition, the Japanese publisher only released a remake of the aforementioned Let Us Cling Together on the PlayStation Portable, which inevitably limited its potential success due to the console being far from the most popular gaming system available in 2011. The publisher, however, is ready to give the series another chance with Tactics Ogre: Reborn, which is, in my opinion, the best way to enjoy the classic Let Us Cling Together thanks to many quality-of-life improvements and gameplay tweaks that make the experience more enjoyable than ever.

Tactics Ogre, crown jewel of the tactical role-playing genre, is reborn! Based on the 2010 release, the game features improved graphics and sound, as well as updated game design, bringing to life a new Tactics Ogre that remains true to its roots. Reviewed on PC.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn is the first game in the Ogre Battle series to release in over a decade. Reborn serves as a remaster of Tactics: Ogre Let Us Cling Together, a 2010 PSP remake of the 1995 SNES game of the same name. A long and storied legacy has come from the series, which was an early frontrunner for the tactics genre. Reborn is as such, a loyal recreation of those early, tough and minimalistic genre experiences. Even if that comes with some hard truths and imperfect quality-of-life addi...
