Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

A welcome surprise, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon really clicked with me. The Euro indie Skyrim that could, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon might not be as technically sound as other genre efforts, but across its 60-80 hour playtime there's a lot to enjoy here, while its inventive take on Arthurian legends and surprisingly effective writing all add up to make it a compelling prospect for RPG fans everywhere that don't want to wait 89 years for the next mainline Elder Scrolls title to drop.

Step into a haunting, lore-rich open-world RPG where reality bends, myths fade, and your choices shape the fate of Avalon. In this review, we explore how Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon delivers a deeply immersive experience that blends classic RPG mechanics with modern storytelling and morally complex quests, perfect for fans of Skyrim, The Witcher, and other dark fantasy games.

Despite its lack of refinement, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is entertaining and addictive. It has a sprawling story and world to explore with dozens of hours of content. Its combat is more effective and engaging than you might expect. It’s a bit messy to be sure, but fans of classic RPGs are almost certain to enjoy Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon’s take on Arthurian mythology and old-school roleplaying games.

May 28, 2025 Read Review

At its core, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a first-person, open-world RPG reminiscent of genre classics like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It leans heavily into storytelling, exploration, and atmosphere, but it's more classic in its approach in that it trades power fantasies for something a bit more desperate. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon's world has been designed to ensure players feel vulnerable and exposed, regardless of the progress they've made. It's fairly slow, quite depressing at times, and frequently cruel, and will test even the most battle-...

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a very ambitious project from a young indie studio. It has traveled a long road in early access to reach this point, but it was well worth it.

May 25, 2025 Read Review

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon puts an interesting spin on Arthurian legend and presents a competent world that plays like a love letter to the open-world first-person RPG genre.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a good game and has the potential to be an excellent game with more patches and polish. It could become a very exciting title if the Questline development team eventually adds more depth to character-build mechanics through DLC, item design, or expansions. In its current state, it is a worthwhile experience if you are looking for another open-world RPG with an interesting storyline, lots of interesting areas to explore, and, at times, a spectacular-looking world setting. But don't expect a fully polished and bug-free experience.

It's been over two years since Questline’s Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon went into Early Access and so much of it has improved over that time. This is a traditional RPG with not only a means of creating a character that best suits your playstyle, but also a story that revolves around every decision and action that's taken. While the game came out at a less than opportune time given the remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was shadow dropped a month prior to its release, Tainted Grail offers a new type of experience that's reminiscent of old Bethesda.

Think of one of your favorite games of all time. Chances are, there’s some passionate team of developers out there trying to make their own experience molded after that same shared love for the game. Trouble is, unless you’re a development studio with the same staffing level as Bethesda or Rockstar, you probably won’t be making the next Elder Scrolls or Grand Theft Auto. Polish studio Questline has tried the impossible with their take on spinning an Arthurian tale with the first-person finesse of Bethesda’s signature RPG series. Does Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon deserve a seat at The Roun...

One of the worst things is when you see potential and promise in something, but it doesn’t reach the heights you know it can. That is probably the best way to describe my experience with Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon, the dark fantasy open world RPG which uses the King Arthur legend as the basis for the setting and story.

Awaken Realms came onto the scene not all that long ago with the publication of This War of Mine The Board Game, but since then has been taking the industry by storm with consistently successful releases. The Edge: Dawnfall came out a couple years back, followed by Lords of Hellas and Nemesis, which began arriving at doorsteps earlier this year. Now, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is being delivered and after playing through the campaign I can say that backers are in for a real treat.
