Tearaway Unfolded does nearly everything right, leading to one of the most surprisingly fun games available on the market right now.

Unfolded ranks as one of the best remasters released, exhibiting a clear sense of love of the property that simply isn't seen when many older games arrive on new systems.

The PS Vita gem just got even better.

Leave it to Media Molecule to find a purpose for all of those gadgets that Sony stuffed into the DualShock 4 controller. Tearaway Unfolded, a remixed edition of the Guildford-based developer's underappreciated PlayStation Vita exclusive, may feature a papery protagonist named either Iota or Atoi, but it's the PlayStation 4's input device that's the real star of the show here. You'll need to push, poke, and stroke your way through this whimsical world, and while other developers would falter at the first hurdle, the LittleBigPlanet maker somehow finds a way to make the title's gimmicky gameplay work. Of course, this will come as no surprise to some of you, as the studio's done this once already before.

A great platformer in its own right, Tearaway Unfolded doesn’t quite capture the revelatory magic of its Vita predecessor, partly because the gameplay and scope remain limited next to sophisticated, inventive controls.

Despite its downfalls, Tearaway Unfolded is a fantastic platformer that any fan of the genre should check out. Its gorgeous visuals go a long way into making the janky controls forgivable, and the delightful character designs, excellent storytelling and unforgettable soundtrack all add up to one very pleasant platform experience that PlayStation owners of any age will be able to appreciate.

Tearaway was a game deserving of a much greater audience than the one that it got on the PS Vita, but Unfolded goes a long way beyond simply trying to port that game across to the PS4. It reimagines many of the ways you interact with the game’s papercraft world and it expands and builds upon some of the ideas in the handheld version, yet never strays too far from what was already a wonderful experience.

Tearaway Unfolded takes the enjoyable platformer from the PS Vita and makes it even better on the PS4. It might lose a little bit of its luster in the transition, mostly due to the two year timespan in between, but fans of Media Molecule's gaming style will find a lot to love here.

Tearaway Unfolded successfully translates so many aspects of the original. It remains a distinctive experience which celebrates creativity and fun with undimmed enthusiasm and invention, and along the way asks you to do things very few games do – whether that’s designing a snowflake or christening a baby wendigo. It takes a familiar controller and makes you play with it in a different way. Its new areas unsurprisingly offer fun and fresh ideas, but they definitely feel crammed into the narrative of the original which suffers as a consequence. Tearaway Unfolded is a big and bold adaptation, but lacks some of the original's intimate charm.

A noble effort to recreate one of the PS Vita’s best games on a home console, but the end result never feels quite as elegant or organic as the original.

While the PlayStation Vita might have been a failure by all accounts, there is two points about the system that can never be argued. One, there were some really good or clever games on the system, and two, it had some really good features. In the latter department though, these clever features did not really get the look in that they deserved having only a handful of games that made use of them, but undeniably these games were certainly full of quality. One of the strongest examples of the Vita merging its excellent features with a good game is Tearaway, this game embraced its platform and offered more to the player then they might have realised the Vita was capable of. It now comes to a point of wondering, in a game so solidly built for the Playstation Vita can an updated transition to Sony’s PlayStation 4 capture the spirit of the original?
