The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

I enjoyed my time with Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics. It provided lots of variety, both in map design as well as gameplay options, while providing a, mostly, fair challenge. It keeps mostly to the plot of the series, though there are embellishments along the way.

A surprisingly fun tactics game that predictably can't quite capture the show's best qualities.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is a solid game, especially if you like the source material. If you aren’t interested in the show or strategy games, then this won’t convince you to like them in any meaningful way. While it was nice to replay the first season of Netflix’s show, this was a missed opportunity to capitalize on the success of this new era of puppet mastery.

An enjoyable addendum to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Tactics offers hours of strategic fun, though those familiar with the source material will get the most out of it.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is quite a sizeable game for its price – you can expect to get at least ten hours of play out of it. It has decent music and visuals, too. It’s just a shame that its story isn’t engaging at all. If it wasn’t for the enjoyable nature of its battles – which admittedly don’t try to raise the bar – it’d be a total disaster. So, if you’re a fan of The Dark Crystal or just love strategy RPGs, you’ll get some enjoyment out of it. Just don’t expect it to blow you away. If you have little interest in either of those things, however, there’s nothing for you he...

The Dark Crystal fans will certainly be happy to leap back into the world originally created by Jim Henson once again with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, but those just looking for a new tactical RPG to play would be better suited looking elsewhere.

Feb 4, 2020

All in all Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance Tactics is better as a television series than a video game. However, if you're looking to spend more time in this universe you'll find enough to be satisfied.

Tactics is for those who’ve watched The Dark Crystal, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the depth and richness of the show. You should give that a go, though. I know it’s got Muppets in it. It’s still good.

Despite being far less common nowadays, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics keeps the long tradition of the mediocre licensed game alive. It does a decent job of aping ideas from some of the great strategy RPGs that came before it, but doesn’t execute any of them as well. Couple those missteps with its aggravating menus, and The Dark Crystal Tactics quickly becomes more tedious than fun to play.

A competent enough clone of Final Fantasy Tactics but unlike the TV show it lacks any real sense of imagination or invention.

Someone looking for a playable, reliable turn-based tactics game will find one with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics. It gets the job done, but does so in the most generic, unexciting way imaginable. It completely fails to take advantage of the Dark Crystal IP, and is simply not very fun to play. Instead of playing this latest Netflix game adaptation, fans of the Dark Crystal franchise would be better off re-watching the TV series and keeping their fingers crossed for an Age of Resistance season 2.

The game is a simple yet quality strategy experience. It tones down a lot of the more unforgiving mechanics the genre is known for yet maintains a satisfying level of challenge. The game is available now on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch for $19.99.
