The Horror at Highrook is a look at eldritch horror through the lens of a TTRPG. While the game can have a lot of text, the management style of gameplay sets it apart from other horror titles and will ensure you lose hours of time before it's done.

I love the idea of board games, but the reality of the time, space, and effort required to set them up and get enough people together, let alone learning the arcane rulesets means that anything outside of a card game or a nostalgic game of Scrabble or Cluedo (never Monopoly, though) is rarely an option for me. That being the case, I’m always happy to see digital versions that alleviate most of those concerns, where even the rules are more easily learned through in-game tutorials. y latest foray in this genre feels like a mix of Cultist Simulator and Cluedo, with a static mansion game board and...

Far be it from me to knock repetition, though. I love games that let me meaninglessly replay the same gameplay loop to no end — and here, there is one! Given the torrid circumstances in which I started playing it, I’m quite glad that I’m cool on the game. If it had been some ravaging psychological journey with all sorts of unlikely combos to decipher, I think I would have had to play it in bursts, rather than cramming it into the first three days of this week. It’s certainly touched a few of the nerves exposed by my house clearout, but ultimately, it reminds me just as much of the closing day or two when I went from room to room mindle...

Eldritch horrors surround Highrook Manor, but they're child’s play for the four plucky investigators at your beck and call. Nullpointer’s sophomore release, The Horror at Highrook, is a new abstract RPG adventure centered on cards and a ticking timer, elevated by a finely woven horror yarn. Published by Outersloth (of Clickolding fame), The Horror at Highrook’s busy simulation struggles with some indie-born limitations - including the lack of voiceover - but earns its keep with a compelling narrative and accessibly cozy gameplay.
