If you own a PS4 and are into fighting games, or are just starting in the competitive scene, The King of Fighters XIV is perfect for you. It is simplistic and easy to use on the surface, but still has huge combos and advanced mechanics for players to learn and master if they put time into the game. While I summarized my feelings in the final thoughts of this article, I still have to mention how impressed I am with this game. SNK was a company in crisis after the King of Fighters XIII, and once KOF XIV was announced and the rebranding of the company made public, SNK knew it was on the right path. The game isn’t necessarily a world-mover, however, with all the hubbub that Street Fighter V had surrounding it, and the fact that other games’ launches were relatively quiet, The King of Fighters XIV moves the needle enough to make some kind of impact on the scene. King of Fighters XIV brings one of the genre's longest running franchises to the current generation with mixed results visually. The gameplay is deep should players want to explore it and friendly to newcomers just jumping on with the series. The soundtrack is fantastic and the net code is far improved over its predecessor. We have a winner folks.

Visual inconsistency aside, the newest entry in the King of Fighters proves to be one of its best. The gameplay and mechanics are as solid as ever and there's plenty for newcomers and old guard alike to enjoy.
With a new console generation finally comes a new entry in The King of Fighters invitational tournaments. The last time Mai Shiranui had seen the big screen was nearly five years ago with the thirteenth numbered entry in this stories series. Despite some hiccups with trying out new things for the series, including not just one but two 3D fighters on the Playstation 2, number XIV revitalizes the series with fresh blood and a new tournament scene that’s available exclusively on the Playstation 4.
King of Fighters XIV falls somewhere between XII and XIII. It’s not exactly bare-bones and the roster is mighty, but the gaudy presentation and by-the-book story is distracting, and takes away a lot of the uniqueness of the series.
As other fighting game series expand the genre’s territory with new single-player modes and art styles, The King of Fighters series digs its trench deeper, appealing to the interests of the hardcore fighting game fan. The King of Fighters XIV doesn’t deviate from that, and while the core three-on-three fighting allows expressive and tense matches, it doesn’t give new players a good enough reason to jump in.
Everyone has their favourite 2D fighting series whether it's Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, or Mortal Kombat. But, one thing's for sure: The King of Fighters is not one to ignore. So, let's see if this latest iteration has what it takes to emerge victorious.
The King of Fighters XIV is the first fighting game I have played on PS4 at home, and as such, almost all of the game was new to me. I have reviewed it through the lens of someone new to both this particular title and the genre it represents.
The music featured in King of Fighters XIV is as fast and fun as its gameplay. Each stage has a memorable track accompanying it, which adds to the energy and excitement the game exudes. The techno beats in particular make King of Fighters XIV feel like a true arcade game, minus the token-taking.
