The Last Faith Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
The Last Faith is not just a game; it's a haunting symphony of gameplay, storytelling, and atmosphere that sets a new standard for the genre. It's a journey that demands to be experienced, a masterpiece that will leave an indelible mark on the souls of those who dare to step into its dark embrace.
Fun fact, but growing up, I was heavily into emo culture. I wore the clothing, painted my nails, and was moody as hell. My attitude and the alternative lifestyle meshed beautifully – it gave me identity. I was hooked, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that out of every From Software game, I’ve only touched Bloodborne. Everything about the depressing motif resonated. It’s gorgeous in how dark it is, and there’s something truly captivating about the deliciously grotesque elements. ...
A deadly and delightful dance of blood and unholy darkness, The Last Faith is an enjoyable Metroidvania that honors its inspirations while being a fun time in its own right.
It’s safe to say that we’ve been bowled over by The Last Faith on the whole. We’ve been lost at times, pouring over the map in the hope of finding a clue as to where we should go next, but it’s rarely dampened our enthusiasm to play. And thanks to many weapons, skills and other items to discover, time spent exploring never feels wasted anyway. While this is a game that doesn’t really offer anything original or ground breaking, then, it remains engaging nonetheless.
The music is great, as are the sound effects. The mix on both can be off, with music cutting off outright when you transition between areas. A simple fade in and out would keep it from being so constantly jarring. When it’s playing though, the soundtrack is fantastic. Proper bombastic orchestral voiced tracks add to the gravitas of each boss fight, and the voice acting is mostly great. A few characters don’t keep up with the quality of the rest, but they are the exception.
Everything on display here has been seen before, and though it does those things well, its reliance on a tried-and-true formula and its liberal borrowing from Bloodborne in particular work against it, denying it a unique identity. Yet despite the impulse to think that The Last Faith could just be 2D Bloodborne 2, the final product is a great Metroidvania on its own, and - aside from some of the writing - its adaptation of the work that inspired it is very well done. Ultimately, The Last Faith feels sharp, looks great, and it's a lot of fun to play. Playstack clearly loves and understands the g...
The Last Faith is a gloomy gothic 2D Metroidvania action game developed by Kumi Souls Games and drawing strong influence from the old 2D Castlevania titles along with a hearty helping of Bloodborne for good measure. The game boasts some solid art and decent combat and is overall not a bad time, but otherwise doesn’t do a whole lot to make itself stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
The Last Faith is a compelling addition to the Metroidvania and Soulslike genres. The game's detailed landscapes reveal a captivating blend of challenging gameplay and narrative missteps. However, while the title pays homage to its inspirations, its struggle to carve a distinctive identity and occasional dependence on established works become evident.
This is all to say it’s well worth the time for even seasoned metroidvania enthusiasts, but it can be hard to ignore the areas that needed a bit more refinement while spending said time with it. The Last Faith is a strong title with some clear stumbles, but quality still wins out more often than not, and I’m eager to see Kumi Souls Games’ next effort as a result.
The Last Faith marries elements of Metroidvania gameplay with Soulslike combat into an overall package that certainly looks divine. We take a look to see if it's the genre's second coming or just another false idol.
The Last Faith fails to make waves in a market already far too saturated to make space for something that doesn't bring innovation. Beautiful design, both in sound and scene, is let down by predictable gameplay.
