A fun and well-made indie action game based on Taiwan's history and folktales.
What I like about reviewing indie games, you sometimes get a chance to review a hidden gem, as is the case with The Legend of Tianding. The attention to detail,
Have you heard? The Legend of Tian Ding has swooped in to deliver exciting kung fu combat and platforming. Take a look at how this Taiwanese treasure gives us an insight into Taiwan's history and culture during this historical period.
The Legend of Tian-Ding is an action-packed, kung-fu tale with great writing and an even greater art style. The comic book depicting 1900s Taipei is glorious and such a gorgeous aesthetic to play through; Its use was well executed and added layers of humour, threat, and depth to all characters of this heroic tale. Tian-Ding is a fantastic indie hidden gem that I hope becomes, like Liao Tian-Ding, legendary.
I love when I get to watch a movie or play a game based on an exaggerated interpretation of a local folk hero. This was one of the (many) reasons I loved watching RRR last year, knowing the main characters were actually based on real-life folk heroes fighting for the independence of their land. The Legend of Tianding is a similar case, though nowhere near as over-the-top. This enjoyable side-scroller is based on the real life character of Liao Tianding, a person best described as “the Taiwa...
A stellar slice of indie goodness whose frenetic and precise fighting elevates it above the pack, while highlighting an important chapter in Taiwanese history.
What kept me going was the excellent presentation and cool beats alongside the game’s short and sweet narrative campaign. The game supports multiple languages and the typeface for each one is simply gorgeous. I personally kept it in Japanese just because it almost looked like I was reading the game off an eReader. The game has plenty of bespoke panels that fly in and out effortlessly. If you are a fan of manga or manhwa and are curious about Asian stories (and in particular, those about countries under Japanese rule during the late 1800s), I can easily recommend this game. This is one of those...
As a combat experience The Legend of Tianding is up there with the Guacamelee! series, showcasing excellent gameplay that allows you to string together multiple attacks and use your enemies’ weapons against them. With distinct chapters introducing their own standalone missions, however, the game stubbornly forces you to endure a huge amount of set-up, with long conversations with NPCs and arduous treks across the hub world of Taipei. Trimming this fat would have benefited the overall pacing greatly, but push through this and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most thrilling combat experiences ...
In my mind, The Legend of Tianding is a perfect gaming experience. Not because it can do everything, or that it allows the player to do anything. It’s perfect because it accomplishes all of its aesthetic and storytelling goals without overstaying its welcome. Despite offering only six story-driven chapters, its gritty depiction of colonial Taiwan feels lavish with mystery and possibilities. This surprised me, since the game doesn’t pull any punches about its oppressive setting.
