Overall, The Wolf Among Us has been an amazing experience. While the gameplay and layout are nearly identical to The Walking Dead; the tone, story, and artwork take The Wolf Among Us out of its predecessor's shadow and give it a permanent place at its side as a prime example of expert storytelling in gaming- with the side effect of the two games being cursed to forever being mentioned in tandem. I know I already said this up top, but if you haven't already started playing The Wolf Among Us (or The Walking Dead for that matter) you need to get on it ASAP.
The Wolf Among Us Episode 5: Cry Wolf is a wonderful cap to Telltale’s season. It made me not only want to replay the episode to see various outcomes, but the entire series to see if I had missed any clues planted early on. The writing is great, the action is satisfying, and living with the consequences of my decisions is fantastically powerful. Simply put, The Wolf Among Us’ finale provides some of the finest storytelling I’ve played in a long time.
So, this is it. We’ve finally made it to the end of protagonist Bigby Wolf’s investigation into the murder of a Fabletown resident that began some eight months ago. It’s been one hell of a journey, with plot twists, surprising levels of violence, and acts so unspeakable that Walt Disney would turn in his grave if he knew what several of his precious princesses had been up to. Fortunately, The Wolf Among Us: Episode 5 – Cry Wolf continues Telltale Games’ winning streak, tying everything together in one of the most climactic and eventful productions that the developer has ever released.
This is our highest rated episode of the series with episode one and two coming in at a close second and third. Average out the scores of each of our reviews and the series as a whole tops off at a solid 80/100. Not too shabby for a brand new series that failed to keep the intrigue flowing throughout each and every episode. Let's hope that this isn't the last we'll see of Bigby Wolf and that season two will be even better.
The visuals, while still appealing, act a bit unsteady at times and the episode could have been longer. Telltale is asking for a fair chunk of cash for an episode that is measurable more in minutes than hours. But the art style, excellent voice acting and interesting story do more than enough to make up for those other deficiencies as Telltale Games turns in its finest release yet.
Cry Wolf ends one of the best murder mysteries in recent memory on a high note with a masterfully delivered narrative and resonant themes about the meaning of choice.
Not the ending most will be looking for, but there is still some questions answered most will be interested in hearing.
