Thief is far from the grand return to the franchise fan were hoping for, but the stealthy heart of Thief: The Dark Project is still there. The majority of fans might not be completely happy with it, but a new audience will undoubtedly get a good taste of the classic franchise. You can't help but praise Eidos for the work they have done with the stealth systems and lighting as on the trusty Xbox 360 it looks good, but you always feel there could be more. So, if you can look past the weak story, dull characters and repetitive hub...

Best when played stealthily, Thief is an excellent stealth title and a welcome addition to your next-gen library.

Thief does many things right. The gameplay is great for the most part, Garrett is his same wonderful self, it looks wonderful, the AI often works well, and the range of customization options is amazing. Missions are enjoyable with a couple of real stand-out superb ones, the six proper side-missions are all fun, and Basso has over 20 mini-missions (that can be quite puzzling) to make traversing the City hub more interesting and makes the total playing time a decent 15-20 hours. Thief feels like a game that couldn't even get the basics right, let alone offer anything new and interesting. It will almost certainly be a let down for fans of the series, and new comers will likely expect much more from such a respected series and developer.

Thief is a great escape for those of you who yearn for more stealth experiences, but it doesn’t really offer up anything exciting. To say the Thief community has patiently waited for Garrett the Master Thief to return would be an understatement. Fans have been chomping at the bit for some 10-years waiting for a new Thief game. Throughout the years however this fan base has grown increasingly agitated with rumours of delays and just a general lack of progress towards a final build of the game. Finally the wait is over and Thief has arrived as one of the more hotly anticipated games...

There are elements of a better game in Thief — maybe even a great one. I enjoyed Garrett's adventure when it was about stealing, when it was about getting into a structure creatively and sneaking away, about accumulating and spending loot. But I wanted much more of that breaking and entering than it was willing to give me. Thief never quite pulls it together. Instead, too often, I felt like a mouse in a narrow hallway filled with cats.

Thief is an inconsistent game that has just as many failings as it does successes. Fans of the stealth genre will find a lot to like here, but a number of poor design decisions keep it from reaching the heights of its predecessors.

Splinter Cell, Hitman, Deus Ex: if you’ve ever enjoyed any games in those esteemed series, you owe a debt of gratitude to Thief – the 1998 stealth-‘em-up that spawned a hundred copycats.
