Unless I’ve somehow forgotten something spectacular, the last Wii U title worth playing and desperately needing a Switch port is now Project Zero: Maiden of Blackwater. Tokyo Mirage Sessions was one of the very few Wii U titles that I’ve been hanging out for a Switch re-release of since I first got my hands on the console, and it doesn’t disappoint on any level. It’s a brilliant concept, well told, and backed by Atlus’ skill with turn-based combat at its peak.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is the best version of a great game. It’s got great characters with a lot of depth (except for Itsuki), varied visual themes, wonderful music, and an addictive battle system. Its debut didn’t get the attention it deserved, but maybe this encore will shine a spotlight on one of the best RPGs in recent memory.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore remains one of the best Role Playing Games I've ever played. Everything from the characters to the battles has its own specific purpose, making for one meaningful adventure. Right from the get go, the game races at break-neck speed and really doesn't stop. Even as someone who played the game multiple times, I was charmed all over again by #FE's unique way of presenting the Japanese entertainment industry. What made it better are the improved loading times as well as the training dungeons, which slim down the potential grinding you have to do. As a result, you c…

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore's incredibly colorful style brightens up your day. The addicting JRPG gameplay keeps you occupied for hours, and the soundtrack will remain stuck in your head for months to come.

Not only does this re-release of an underappreciated Wii U JRPG represent the best possible version of the game, it’s also now on a platform that suits it perfectly

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore feels particularly timely. The world hasn’t been the brightest, most hopeful place in recent years, but leading a team of cheerful, committed teen pop idols against demonic entities makes it feel that much brighter. This is a game that’s dedicated to hope for the future, and that creativity is an integral component of that. I’m willing to believe them too.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore may not offer too much of an upgrade for those that dove deep into the Wii U version but everyone else will find an entertaining story featuring a great combat system and excellent soundtrack.

Back in 2016 the Wii U was waning more than ever, with only a few Nintendo published titles on the horizon and plenty of murmurs of something called the NX.

This is not the game anyone thought it would be. Which is not to say there was ever a solid singular idea for what the long-teased Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem crossover would look like. After all, you’d be hard pressed to find two settings that are less compatible. The low urban fantasy of SMT with its strong religious themes is a natural foil for the high medieval fantasy of Fire Emblem, not exactly easy crossover material. Still though, going with a Japanese Idol theme was a deci...

As a guilty pleasure, my phone has had several game soundtracks on it now for years, one of those being the music selection from the CD that came along with Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE's Wii U special edition. When people pass me the aux, they don't know what to expect, and I'm prepared to blow minds each and every time. Despite that though, I never actually finished Tokyo Mirage Sessions on Wii U. The fact is, the Wii U version had several issues that, while never game-breaking, were certainly annoying. But that's exactly why I've been looking forward to Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore, the brand new and enhanced Nintendo Switch version of the game. And in a few ways, it lived up to my expectations and breathed new life into the JRPG.

While Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore may not have quite as much Fire Emblem influence as some fans may want, the two series go very well together with a unique premise and Mirage system that is overlaid upon a pretty traditional turn-based system at its core that will satisfy both fan bases.

Slay strategically in deep, stylish RPG battles as the worlds of the Fire Emblem series and Atlus games have crossed paths again and the result is coming with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore.

January 24, 2020 Read Review

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is very much a bubbly and upbeat RPG that never dives too deeply into the sinister side of idol culture, and instead focuses on fun and colorful musical numbers, and the general sense of having a good time.

TMS #FE Encore is a solid enough RPG that doesn't play to its strengths and ultimately falls short of greatness.

January 26, 2020 Read Review

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore features some much-needed quality of life improvements, as well as a strong opening and novel combat. But, ultimately, tedious dungeon design and unrefined boss battles that plagued the original remain and prevent Encore from being the improvement it could be.

Any Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, or JRPG fan shouldn't hesitate to pick up Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. It's fantastic to see another lost gem from the Wii U shine brightly on the Nintendo Switch.

For those who I've spoken with that have heard of Tokyo Mirage Sessions before, they usually say something along the lines of, "Oh, it's Persona with Fire Emblem characters," which is a simplification that does the game a disservice. The aesthetic, charm and gameplay Tokyo Mirage Sessions brings make it worthy to stand on its own and I hope that those who end up playing the game see it this way as well. Nintendo seemed to think that Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was worthy of an encore here on Switch, and I find it to be a worthy encore, indeed.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE Encore makes the jump from the Wii U to the Nintendo Switch. It’s a Japanese RPG that fuses together elements of Persona and Fire Emblem into one of the Switch’s best games.

If you’re looking for a crazy ride jam-packed with zany characters, colourful backgrounds, over-the-top battles and a devilishly delightful pop soundtrack, look no further, because Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE brings all of this and more, breathing much-needed life and zest into the Wii U library. Mashing up the Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem series with a story premise based around pop stars might sound strange, but that’s because it absolutely is, and I loved every minute of it.
