Those who haven’t played Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters: Daybreak Special Gigs can now pick up a cleverly built mix of RPG and visual novel on PC. From its animate characters to the toys and fights the game offers, there’s a lot of effort put in to make its audience a participant, instead of a passive element. Some hiccups in challenge and follow-through do apply, but they are hardly stacked up to how facilitating this adventure is in other places. Visual novels shouldn’t be boring and Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters: Daybreak Special Gigs is the proof.

The result is a game that is genuinely unique. Classy in tone and hugely interesting in design, this is a game that is worth supporting simply on that basis; there’s some elements that don’t work as well as they should, but then that’s the consequence of experimentation. What is important is that the game is deeply playable, very creative, and hugely entertaining as a result.

Ultimately, Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters: Daybreak Special Gigs is more of Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters, for better as well as for worse. The changes to the systems aren’t enough to alleviate some of the frustration of the original, but for players that are open to the experience (or who enjoyed things the first time around), there’s a lot to like about it.

Ridding the physical realm of dastardly apparitions is a solid premise for a video game yet few are actually worth playing. Thankfully, Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters offers a unique spin on the concept so get ready to bust some ghosts!

There is fun to be had here, a good deal perhaps, especially for fans of visual novels. The beautiful visuals, compelling dark atmosphere and interesting story and dialogue are all strong reasons to give this a go. Be aware though that the jarring combat breaks up the flow of the game and sends the fun factor plummeting. It’s unfortunate that it would be so much easier to recommend as a simple visual novel.

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters: Daybreak Special Gigs, despite its ridiculous name, certainly has some redeeming elements. Its visual novel elements are certainly strong, thanks to interesting characters and an enjoyable story. Unfortunately, the obtuse dialogue mechanics and frustrating luck-based battle system are some pretty glaring issues. On top of that, the lack of explanations for many mechanics is undeniably odd for a game with unique systems. If this updated version of the game made any improvements on that front, then I’d really hate to see how unclear it was in the original version. T...

The game has developed a cult following since its original releases, and seems to have developed a “love it or hate it” reputation. After my experience with the title, I definitely fall into the latter category. The slow start combined with the mechanics presented created a painful experience, and by the time the plot revved up, I found it hard to care much about it anymore.
