Unto The End is a must-play for all the Souls-Borne fans who wouldn't miss anything in that FromSoftware vein. More importantly, it could be an excellent gateway title for players who haven't played a Souls-like game. Winning combat in Unto The End is a matter of being smart rather than having powerful weapons or a high-level character. For me, using my own skills to conquer my enemies was the cherry on top of an exceptional title.
Unto The End is a challenging game, but not overwhelmingly so. Each combat scenario is unique which keeps things fresh, while the world itself looks nice and hints at a wider world that cares little of your character's adventure. A handful of fights are frustrating and will hold you up, but Unto The End does not overstay its welcome and is easy to recommend to those who enjoy tough fighting challenges.
Though it's a small package, Unto the End manages to deliver both an amazing visual experience and surprisingly deep combat systems. You won't want to miss the sort of adventure that will keep you coming back for more punishment, death after death.
The opening minutes of Unto the End definitely help to set your expectations of what this game is all about. You’re in a sparse looking wilderness and waved off by your family to go hunting for food. Of course it isn’t long before you get into trouble. After trying to chase after a deer you end up falling through some thin ice into a strange cave system filled with eerie looking creatures. You are all alone and no one is coming to help you.
Cruel, unforgiving, desolate landscapes. A desperate journey across frigid mountain peaks and through pitch-black underground caverns. Violent, bloodied, monstrous beasts. One directive: find your way home. This is the premise of Unto The End, a 2D combat survival adventure that pits a lone adventurer against a harsh wilderness and a variety of wild, savage creatures.
Unto The End is a beautiful game with stunning visuals, but it’s held back by uneven – and sometimes downright frustrating – gameplay.
I “got good” for Ys. I did so for Fire Emblem games. Hell, I spent time “getting good” to finally beat Through the Fire in Flames on Expert in Guitar Hero III, back when that was something to be proud of. The thing is, all of those games felt rewarding to “get good” at. Unto the End is just an exercise in frustration, where the only thing “getting good” gets you is an even more infuriating fight ahead of you.
I understand why someone would enjoy Unto The End. I’m sure that some players out there like being kicked in the teeth with their hands tied behind their back. That, personally, sounds like a bad time, much like Unto The End wasn’t a good time. If I wanted to play a game that didn’t function as described, I would at least play a game that kind of wanted me to like it.
I'd say "I'm sorry, Unto", but I'm really not sorry because I hate this sluggish, clumsy little arsehole and I wish he'd stayed dead the first time. Some of you will like him (and it's worth giving it a go via Game Pass to see if you do). But that's your problem now.
