Believe it or not, it's been an entire decade since Sega's turn-based strategy war series debuted. Valkyria Chronicles 4 brings the franchise back to its roots but does it hold up in 2018?

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is what happens when you safely positively iterate on a beloved game. It doesn’t pull any punches and returns to the series’ roots in a way that is both nostalgic and new. By adding more character depth, a new class and expanding the battlefields, Sega has really managed to capture my attention again. It might be too safe, but it’s great to see such a solid new addition to a series of games that have had a few missteps.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a game of extremes. Its romantic attitude towards soldiers clashes with a desire to tell a tale of mass violence and corpse-laden battlefields. It is as intimate as it is loud, and each moment captivates even if the parts are often greater than the whole.

If you didn't like Valkyria Revolution, or any entry since Valkyria Chronicles 1 for that matter, you're going to love Valkyria Chronicles 4. If you've always missed out on this series, but want something to whet your Fire Emblem appetite and enjoy a pseudo-WWII setting, you're in for a treat. Valkyria Chronicles 4 shows that SEGA does listen to the fans and that the series has plenty of life left in it.

More a remake than a sequel but still a welcome return for one of the most original and distinctive genre mash-ups of recent years.

As I stated in my preview of Valkyria Chronicles 4 at the start of the month, I absolutely loved Valkyria Chronicles when it came out on the PS3. What captured me was a host of highly engaging characters featured in one of the most charming and visually appealing games I've ever had the joy of playing. I thought and still think it was impeccable.

What remains, even still, is a sense of contradictory emotions. I do love Valkyria Chronicles 4 for many reasons. Its characters are more endearing than any I had encountered in the series thus far and its systems and mechanics are still as engaging as ever. However, there is still plenty going against even its most positive attributes. Unable, or simply refusing, to acknowledge its own identity as a product of anti-fascist ideals, I can’t help but find its story underwhelming. More concerned with its own past than its future, I also can’t help but find its systems simply more of...

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is the sequel I’ve been waiting for, returning to the roots of what made the first game so special. It adds a handful of new and interesting mechanics to its tactical battles, nearly all of which improve the formula in tangible ways, but otherwise plays it fairly safe. The story can feel a little bit impersonal and disconnected from the rest of the series, but the way it makes even the smallest characters important and alive is remarkable. It’s great to see the Valkyria Chronicles series back on track, as it’s still one-of-a-kind.

With its heartwarming visual style, anime-inspired characters , and engaging combat, Valkyria Chronicles 4 on PS4 continues to push the series’ legacy into wider mainstream appeal. Following the misstep that was Valkyria Revolution, plus a few portable-only and Japan-only entries, Valkyria Chronicles 4 returns to the stylish, polished, and refreshing standard that was set by Valkyria Chronicles: Remastered. While the game has flaws that could have been corrected, overall Valkyria Chronicles...

Ultimately, despite being the fourth game in its series, Valkyria Chronicles 4 really is the sequel Valkyria Chronicles needed, and I have to say that I’m pleased that war has never looked more pleasant.

Four titles into the main series of games, Valkyria Chronicles has an established formula that can carry the series along for much longer. Going forward, though, the writing and design of exposition elements set between the battles must be improved upon before the Valkyria games really reach their true potential. Thankfully, this particular iteration gives you plenty of opportunities to step back onto the battlefield for the best moments the game has to offer.

When the original Valkyria Chronicles dropped for the PS3 in 2008, it came about during a dearth of quality Japanese video games in the west and took peoples hearts with its unique visuals. Sega failed for years to properly build upon the success of that original game, and now, ten years later, a lot of what made Valkyria Chronicles unique is all too familiar to many people. Despite that, though, Sega has managed to craft an incredible entry in the long-suffering franchise that is fun, fully-featured, and gorgeous. In a time for the industry where a game like Valkyria Chronicles...

The original Valkyria Chronicles made a big splash on PS3 with its brilliant mix of strategy and action, a fascinating story and characters, and a gorgeous sketchbook art style. Since then, however, the franchise has hit stumbling blocks with the second entry on PSP not gaining as much traction, a third game never even making it to the west, and the spinoff Valkyria Revolution having a very lukewarm reaction from fans and critics alike. Now, 10 years later, Valkyria Chronicles 4 brings a grand return to the series’ roots, and boy what a return it is. A fantastic story, well-developed...

Though it suffers from some relatively minor pacing issues, Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a sublime strategy experience that fans of the genre won’t want to miss out on. The engaging, character-driven plot, third-person action, deep customization options, and high replayability make this one an easy recommendation, although pacing issues and cumbersome menu management may make it a little more intimidating to newcomers to the genre. We're also undecided about where it fits in the franchise hall of fame; the original game perhaps just shades it. All the same, we’d recommend you give Valkyria Chronicles 4 a go; this is a...

Battles start with an overhead map view. From here you position and deploy your troops, drawn from a constantly topped up pool of new recruits. Select a soldier and the view swoops down to ground level, giving you full control of the character in question. You're free to move them around in real-time, though each step uses up some of their finite Action Points.
