Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a must-have for any fan of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and it plays well on the Steam Deck

While lacking the polish and production value that saw the genre float into the mainstream this year, Rogue Trader is a refreshing CRPG experience that values everything that makes games like these so special.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an uneven yet engaging game that's brimming with things to discover and a uniquely compelling narrative that is at times both hopeful and poignant.

Owlcat Games tries to pull off another engrossing CRPG that encapsulates a beloved tabletop universe. Does Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader’s deep world-building and story-telling do enough to override the multitude of bugs that plague it?

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader not only promises, but delivers the very thing it was designed to be – a meaty, authentic Warhammer 40k game that feels right at home in its RPG trappings.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a fantastic turn-based tactical RPG that makes amazing use of its source material while still providing an immense amount of freedom to its players. But how does it hold up in a post-Baldur's Gate 3 world? Here's our review.

Rogue Trader sets itself out from the crowd, both in its franchise and its genre. It feels unique. It’s not just boltguns and chainswords slapped onto Pathfinder. The thought and care to make it have its own identity has been taken, and I hope Owlcat follows through further with it. ‘Cos it works great.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a little rough around the edges, but it’s also the best rendition of the Warhammer universe brought to gamers. It’s perfect for those who are new to Warhammer and DND veterans who want a rich story to experience.

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone respected your authority everywhere you go? That’s the feeling you experience with Warhammer 40000: Rogue Trader when you suddenly inherit the titular position. Everyone bows down to you and listens to your every word. The only problem is, you gain this position during a violent overthrow, leaving you to sort out the mess across the Empire.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a phenomenal roleplaying experience offering an immersive story and an impressive, highly-connected web of features and systems. The soundtrack, writing and voice over are all deliciously over the top, and gameplay provides a new step forward in a tactical cRPG genre, rewarding positioning, teamwork and attention to details. If you are new to the Warhammer franchise, the game can serve as a perfect stepping stone into the universe.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is the sort of game that the Warhammer 40K setting has long needed. A disgustingly massive, social calendar swallowing CRPG offering, Rogue Trader's numerous presentation issues aren't enough to distract from its galaxy-spanning odyssey into Games Workshop's most famous and beloved setting.

Paying extensive homage to the source material while weaving a compelling tale of its own, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is an involving experience with fun combat and memorable characters.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader offers a rewarding roleplaying experience set in the grimdark far future of Games Workshop's storied sci-fi universe — something fans have been screaming for forever. Developer OwlCat Games has learned plenty of tricks from its Pathfinder series, and while still a little rough around the edges, largely succeeds in crafting a fitting tribute worthy of the God-Emperor of Mankind.

A long awaited Warhammer 40K CRPG executed superbly not only in terms of combat but also story, atmosphere, and character building.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is among the best-realized settings ever, one that is ripe with stories to tell. As such, it is not surprising to see so many games based on the futuristic universe created by Games Workshop. Very few of these, however, are full-fledged RPGs, which is, honestly, not that surprising considering the deep and intricate lore that makes creating a role-playing game based on it an extremely difficult task for most game development studios. Owlcat Games, the studio behind the Pathfinder series, however, rose up to the challenge with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, a solid cRPG with tactical turn-based combat based on the classic Rogue Trader ruleset which is only a few steps away from being a must play for all fans of the genre.

Rogue Trader is very much a release in the Owlcat Games mould, combining a great degree of customization with a solid story, meaningful choices, and interesting characters. While all that, combined with excellent use of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, comes perilously close to pushing Rogue Trader into the greatest realm of CRPGs, unfortunate balance issues, obtuse design elements, and myriad bugs prevent the title from achieving its full potential.
