World End Syndome is a visual novel masterpiece. The story is gripping and evocative, blending fun romance and tense murder mystery together incredibly well. The characters are sharp and beautifully illustrated, and the way their personalities and backgrounds developed over the course of the game was equally well-done. There are a lot of romance visual novels on the market at the moment but World End Syndrome is one that’s definitely a little bit special. This is not just because of its absolutely gorgeous visuals or its intriguing characters. Instead it’s the way that it wonderfully blends together breezy romantic storylines with deliciously dark Japanese folklore. This is one of those visual novels that is very hard to put down once you start.
Is this a great game for visual novel newcomers? Probably not. Having an entire half of the game focused on mostly boring slice-of-life isn’t doing the game any favors in hooking in genre newbies. Those that are fans of this format, those who go in knowing what to expect, will likely have a good time here.
